In light of the increasing tensions between the United States of America and the People Republic of China, U.S, over trade, Hong Kong issues and the coronavirus pandemic origin, president Trump has added to the already strained relationship.

President Donald Trump has made a proclamation banning Chinese students and researchers from entering the United States of America. The order targets Chinese students and researchers who have links with the People Liberation Army of China. The order according to Trump is an attempt to stop the Chinese military from stealing technology and intellectual property from the U.S.

On Friday, while issuing the order, president Trump said that China is involved in many, well funded campaigns to steal sensitive technologies and intellectual property from the U.S. that they can use to modernise their military – The People Liberation Army (PLA).

He stated that such actions from China were dangerous to the long-term economic stability and safety of the U.S. Trump went on to accuse China of using students, mostly postgraduate students and postdoctoral researchers to collect the intellectual property.

He said Chinese postgraduate and doctoral students who have links with the People Liberation Army have a higher risk of being recruited or exploited by the Chinese authorities.

“In light of the above, I have determined that the entry of certain” Chinese nationals “seeking to enter the US pursuant to an ‘F’ or ‘J’ visa to study or conduct research in the US would be detrimental to the interests” of America, he said.

On Friday, China responded to Trump’s order to place sanctions on its students as racist. Claiming that it was open political persecution. “The plan exposes a deep-rooted “Cold War” and zero-sum mentality that permeates the thinking of some Americans “Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said. He then warned the US not to violate the legal rights of the Chinese students in America”.

U.S Congressman Mike Rogers, commended the proclamation by Trump as a good thing and said that China wants to become a global leader in technology, and they were even ready to steal the technology.
