A team of the Nigerian Navy Ship Victory patrol (NNS) intercepted a boat made of wood ferrying 144 (one hundred and forty-four) drums of suspected illegally refined petroleum product AGO on it’s way to neighboring country Cameroon.
According to TheNationOnlineNG, Rear Admiral Vincent Okeke, the Commander of the NNS Victory team who was represented by Captain Muhammad Umaru disclosed the efforts of the Navy to capture the smugglers and their loot during a briefing with the press.
The news outlet reported that he handed the suspects to the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Calabar.
According to the report, the Navy estimated the total value of the confiscated items at N15,504,000 (fifteen million, five hundred and four thousand naira) and observed that the force was aware of attempts by smugglers to smuggle illegal items into the country during the festive season to profit at the expense of the country and consumers.
The suspects were named Daniel Nekoli a Cameroonian, and three other Nigerians, Emma Effiong, Kingsley Etim and one Victor Okon. They were apprehended upon their arrival at the jetty and the 114 drums of illegally refined diesel were offloaded from the boat.
