Recapitalisation Funds Into SMEs, Agriculture and Infrastructure

by Nwani July 4, 2026
written by Nwani

Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Olayemi Cardoso, has called on Nigerian banks to ensure that funds raised through ongoing recapitalisation efforts are directed toward critical sectors of the economy, particularly small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), agriculture, and infrastructure.

Speaking on the importance of the banking sector’s recapitalisation programme, Cardoso said the initiative is not merely about increasing banks’ capital bases but about positioning financial institutions to support economic growth and development. He stressed that the additional capital should translate into increased lending and investments in sectors capable of creating jobs and boosting productivity.

According to the CBN governor, SMEs remain a vital component of Nigeria’s economy, while agriculture and infrastructure are essential for achieving food security, industrialisation, and sustainable development. He noted that strategic investments in these areas would help strengthen the country’s economic resilience and accelerate growth.

Cardoso also urged banks to embrace innovation, improve risk management practices, and deepen financial inclusion to ensure that businesses and underserved communities have greater access to credit and other financial services.

The remarks come as Nigerian banks continue efforts to meet the new capital requirements introduced by the Central Bank, with regulators expecting the recapitalisation exercise to create stronger and more resilient financial institutions capable of supporting the country’s long-term economic ambitions.

US Troop Drawdown Sparks Concerns Over Nigeria’s Counterterrorism Readiness

by Nwani July 4, 2026
written by Nwani

Security experts have expressed concerns over Nigeria’s ability to independently sustain counterterrorism operations following the recent reduction of United States military personnel involved in joint operations in the country. The development has reignited discussions about Nigeria’s intelligence capabilities and long-term security preparedness.

The United States reportedly reduced its troop presence in Nigeria after a successful operation in May that led to the killing of a senior ISIS commander in the Lake Chad Basin. Despite the drawdown, the US has assured Nigeria that intelligence-sharing and security cooperation will continue.

Security analysts noted that while Nigeria has recorded significant gains against insurgent groups, challenges remain in intelligence gathering, surveillance technology, and inter-agency coordination. They warned that these gaps could hinder efforts to effectively combat terrorism without sustained international support.

Meanwhile, the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Aneke, has called for stronger integration of air power, intelligence, and joint military operations. He stressed that no single security agency can tackle Nigeria’s increasingly complex security threats alone and advocated greater collaboration among the armed forces and intelligence institutions.

Experts have therefore urged the government to invest more in intelligence infrastructure, technological capabilities, and institutional reforms to ensure that Nigeria can maintain its counterterrorism gains and respond effectively to evolving security challenges.

Operatives of the Kebbi State Hisbah Board have arrested 25 youths during a raid on a hotel in Argungu town over alleged involvement in immoral activities. The operation was carried out by the board under the state’s Ministry of Religious Affairs as part of efforts to curb social vices and promote moral values.

According to the Director of Shariah of the Board, Sirajo Kamba, those arrested include 12 males and 13 females. He said the raid was conducted on July 3 and forms part of the agency’s ongoing campaign to maintain peace, decency, and social order across Kebbi State.

Kamba added that the suspects would be thoroughly investigated in accordance with the law and that anyone found culpable would face the appropriate legal process.

The latest raid comes amid increased enforcement activities by the Hisbah Board, which has carried out similar operations in hotels across the state in recent months as part of its efforts to address what it describes as immoral conduct and other social vices.

Court Fixes July 22 for Saraki’s Arraignment Over Alleged Defamation

by Nwani July 4, 2026
written by Nwani

A Kwara State High Court in Ilorin has fixed July 22, 2026, for the arraignment of former Senate President, Bukola Saraki, over alleged defamatory remarks made against Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq.

The court, presided over by Justice Mohammed O. Folorunsho, dismissed Saraki’s preliminary objection challenging the court’s jurisdiction and ruled that the criminal case should proceed.

The judge held that the charges disclosed offences recognized under the applicable laws and directed that the former Senate President appear for formal arraignment.

According to the prosecution, Saraki allegedly published statements on his verified social media platforms claiming that Governor AbdulRazaq did not possess a secondary school certificate, an allegation the state government describes as defamatory and capable of causing public unrest. Prosecutors further argued that the statements gained wider circulation after being reported by national newspapers.

The case is expected to draw significant public and political attention, given the long-standing rivalry between Saraki’s camp and the current Kwara State administration.

Ebonyi NDC Denies Endorsing PDP Governorship Aspirant for 2027

by Nwani July 4, 2026
written by Nwani

The Ebonyi State chapter of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has dismissed reports claiming it endorsed the governorship ambition of Ifeanyichukwu Odii ahead of the 2027 gubernatorial election.

The party described the reports as false and misleading, insisting that it has not adopted any candidate from the People’s Democratic Party or any other political platform for the upcoming election.

According to the NDC leadership in Ebonyi, the party remains focused on strengthening its structures and preparing to field its own candidates for the 2027 general elections. The chapter urged its members and the public to disregard speculations suggesting an alliance or endorsement arrangement with any governorship aspirant.

The clarification comes amid increasing political activities and consultations ahead of the 2027 elections, with several groups and communities in Ebonyi expressing support for different aspirants, including Odii.

Amaechi Meets Tambuwal in Abuja as ADC Intensifies 2027 Political Consultations

by Nwani July 3, 2026
written by Nwani

Former Rivers State Governor and African Democratic Congress (ADC) vice-presidential candidate for the 2027 election, Rotimi Amaechi, has held a closed-door meeting with former Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Tambuwal, in Abuja amid ongoing political consultations within the opposition party.

Although details of the meeting were not immediately disclosed, the development has sparked speculation about strategic plans being put in place by the ADC ahead of the 2027 general elections. Political observers believe the meeting forms part of broader efforts to strengthen the party’s structures and build alliances ahead of the polls.

The meeting came shortly after the names of ADC presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, and his running mate, Amaechi, were uploaded to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) portal as part of preparations for the 2027 elections.

It also followed a recent ruling by a Federal High Court in Abuja affirming the leadership of former Senate President David Mark as National Chairman of the ADC, a decision viewed by party members as a boost to the opposition’s preparations for the next election cycle.

While the outcome of the Amaechi-Tambuwal talks remains unknown, the meeting underscores the growing political activity within the ADC as key figures continue consultations aimed at positioning the party as a formidable force in the 2027 presidential race.

Atiku Reaffirms 2027 Presidential Ambition as Court Upholds David Mark-Led ADC Leadership

by Nwani July 3, 2026
written by Nwani

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has reiterated his determination to contest the 2027 presidential election following a Federal High Court ruling that affirmed the leadership of the African Democratic Congress under former Senate President David Mark.

The Abuja court dismissed a suit filed by a member of the House of Representatives, Leke Abejide, challenging the legitimacy of the party’s current leadership structure. Justice Musa Liman ruled that the matter concerned the internal affairs of a political party and was therefore beyond the court’s jurisdiction. The court also held that the plaintiff lacked the legal standing to institute the suit and had failed to exhaust the party’s internal dispute resolution mechanisms.

Reacting to the judgment, Atiku described the decision as a victory for constitutional democracy and the rule of law. He commended the judiciary for resisting what he alleged were attempts to use legal processes to destabilise opposition politics in Nigeria.

The former vice president maintained that the David Mark-led National Working Committee emerged through a lawful and transparent process and insisted that no amount of political pressure or litigation would derail the party’s plans ahead of the 2027 general election. He called on party members to remain united and committed to strengthening democratic institutions in the country.

David Mark also welcomed the ruling, describing it as a major victory for democracy and an affirmation of the party’s constitutional processes. The ADC leadership expressed hope that the judgment would put an end to repeated legal challenges and allow the party to focus on positioning itself as a formidable opposition platform ahead of the next presidential election.

US-Nigeria Trade Surges 14% to Nearly $15 Billion in 2025

by Nwani July 3, 2026
written by Nwani

Trade relations between the United States and Nigeria recorded significant growth in 2025, with bilateral trade in goods and services rising by more than 14 percent to nearly $15 billion. The increase highlights the strengthening economic partnerships.

According to reports, the growth was driven largely by expanding commercial activities and a sharp rise in agricultural trade. Agricultural exchanges between both nations climbed to approximately $764 million in 2025, up from $415 million in 2024, representing an 84 percent increase.

Business Insider Africa

The development comes as the United States continues to promote a shift from aid-based engagement with Nigeria to a more commerce-driven relationship. U.S. officials have emphasized the need to create a business environment that supports entrepreneurs, investors, and cross-border trade opportunities between both nations.

The renewed economic momentum has also been supported by the restoration of access for Nigerian banks to U.S.-backed export financing schemes, which are expected to ease imports of critical agricultural inputs and strengthen food supply chains. Analysts believe the initiative could further deepen trade ties and unlock additional investment opportunities in the coming years.

The latest figures reflect growing confidence in the U.S.-Nigeria economic relationship and signal the potential for even greater collaboration across agriculture, commerce, and investment sectors in the future.

Relationships Become Scams When Money Is Involved,Emeka Ike Speaks on Love and Financial Expectations

by Nwani July 3, 2026
written by Nwani

Veteran Nollywood actor Emeka Ike has shared his thoughts on love, marriage, and the role money plays in relationships, insisting that relationships only become “scams” when one partner sees the other primarily as a source of financial gain.

Speaking during an interview with BBC News Pidgin, the actor rejected the widespread belief that love and marriage are scams. According to him, the real problem lies in the intentions people bring into relationships.

Emeka Ike explained that genuine relationships should be built on honesty, commitment, and mutual affection rather than hidden financial motives. He criticized the growing trend of people entering relationships mainly to benefit materially from their partners, arguing that such behaviour undermines the true essence of love and companionship.

The actor also advised Nigerians to be cautious about taking relationship advice from people whose marriages have failed, stressing that every relationship is unique and requires understanding, patience, and effort from both parties.

His comments have sparked discussions online, with many social media users agreeing that relationships should be based on genuine connection rather than financial expectations, while others argued that financial stability often plays a significant role in modern relationships.
