NDLEA Arrests 74-Year-Old Emeka Ikwuakalom With 11 Kilograms of Cocaine at Abuja Airport

by Ayodeji Onibalusi March 16, 2026
written by Ayodeji Onibalusi

Nigeria’s National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arrested a 74-year-old man identified as Emeka Ikwuakalom at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja after discovering a large quantity of cocaine in his luggage.

According to officials, Ikwuakalom was preparing to board a flight to the United Kingdom when security officers intercepted him during routine screening procedures. A search of his luggage reportedly uncovered 11 kilograms of cocaine, a highly controlled narcotic substance.

During questioning, the suspect reportedly claimed that the bag containing the drugs had been handed to him by an unidentified individual, along with a destination address in the United Kingdom where he was instructed to deliver it.

The NDLEA has since taken Ikwuakalom into custody and formally booked him under Nigeria’s drug control enforcement laws.

Authorities say he is expected to be charged in court as investigations continue into the wider network that may be behind the attempted trafficking operation.

Drug trafficking remains a major concern for Nigerian authorities, particularly through international airports, which are frequently targeted by criminal networks attempting to smuggle narcotics to Europe and other destinations.

The agency has repeatedly warned that trafficking syndicates often recruit vulnerable individuals, including the elderly, in an attempt to avoid suspicion during airport checks.

Investigators say further inquiries are ongoing to identify the individuals who allegedly supplied the drugs and organized the operation.

UK Lawmakers Urge PM Starmer to Confront Tinubu Over Killing of Christians During State Visit

UK Parliamentarians Call on PM Starmer to Address Christian Persecutions with Nigerian President Tinubu During State Visit

During Nigerian President Bola Tinubu’s upcoming official visit to the United Kingdom, British legislators have strongly encouraged Prime Minister Keir Starmer to raise concerns regarding the ongoing violence against Christian communities in Nigeria. The visit, which includes First Lady Oluremi Tinubu, will feature a formal reception hosted by King Charles III and Queen Camilla at Windsor Castle.

Context of the Visit and Human Rights Concerns

President Tinubu’s state visit marks a significant diplomatic engagement between the UK and Nigeria, two nations with deep historical ties and extensive economic relations. However, this occasion has also become a platform for addressing pressing human rights issues. Reports indicate that in recent years, Nigeria has witnessed a surge in targeted attacks against Christian populations, with thousands affected by violence linked to extremist groups and communal conflicts.

Calls for Accountability and Diplomatic Pressure

Members of the UK Parliament have voiced their expectation that Prime Minister Starmer use this high-profile meeting to demand accountability and urge the Nigerian government to take decisive action to protect vulnerable religious minorities. Advocates emphasize that diplomatic dialogue should not overlook the humanitarian crisis unfolding in Nigeria, where over 3,000 Christians have reportedly lost their lives in sectarian violence since 2020, according to recent human rights organizations.

Significance of the UK-Nigeria Relationship

The UK and Nigeria share a multifaceted partnership encompassing trade, security cooperation, and cultural exchange. While economic collaboration remains a priority, British officials are increasingly aware that sustainable relations require addressing governance and human rights challenges. The state visit offers a critical opportunity to balance diplomatic courtesies with candid discussions on Nigeria’s internal security and protection of religious freedoms.

Looking Ahead: Potential Outcomes of the Visit

Observers anticipate that the engagement between Prime Minister Starmer and President Tinubu could set the tone for future UK involvement in Nigeria’s peacebuilding efforts. By confronting the issue of Christian persecution directly, the UK government may reinforce its commitment to human rights advocacy while encouraging Nigerian authorities to implement reforms that foster national unity and security.

Kebbi Govt Allegedly Suspends Teacher for Three Months After Criticising Ramadan Palliative [PICS]

Teacher in Kebbi State Faces Three-Month Unpaid Suspension Following Critique of Ramadan Relief Package

In Kebbi State, an educator named Abduljalal Usman has been placed on a three-month suspension without salary after voicing his concerns about the Ramadan relief materials distributed by the state authorities. Employed by the state education sector, Usman took to his Facebook account on Wednesday to share a video where he openly criticized the quality and contents of the food items allocated to teachers as part of the government’s Ramadan support initiative.

Background of the Incident

The suspension comes amid growing debates over the adequacy and transparency of government-provided aid during Ramadan, a period when many Nigerian states distribute palliatives to support vulnerable populations. Usman’s video highlighted perceived shortcomings in the relief package, sparking discussions among educators and the wider community about the effectiveness of such programs.

Government Response and Implications

Following the public criticism, Kebbi State officials reportedly took disciplinary action against Usman, citing a breach of conduct and undermining government efforts. This move has raised questions about freedom of expression among public servants and the balance between constructive feedback and professional responsibilities.

Contextualizing the Issue: Ramadan Palliatives in Nigeria

Ramadan palliative distributions have become a common practice across various Nigerian states, aiming to alleviate food insecurity during the fasting month. However, recent reports indicate that in some regions, including Kebbi, beneficiaries have expressed dissatisfaction with the quality and quantity of items received. For instance, a 2023 survey by the Nigerian Institute of Social and Economic Research found that 38% of recipients felt the aid did not meet their basic needs.

Looking Ahead: The Need for Transparent Aid Distribution

This incident underscores the importance of transparent and accountable distribution of relief materials. Experts suggest that involving community stakeholders in the planning and monitoring processes can enhance trust and ensure that aid reaches those most in need. Additionally, fostering open dialogue between government officials and public servants like teachers can contribute to more effective social support programs.

Michael Carrick Responds Calmly to Paul Scholes’ Criticism

Michael Carrick, the current Manchester United coach, has openly addressed the recent remarks made by club legend Paul Scholes. Despite the pointed nature of Scholes’ comments, Carrick emphasized that he took no offense and remains focused on his coaching responsibilities.

Understanding the Context of Scholes’ Remarks

Paul Scholes, renowned for his candid opinions, recently voiced concerns regarding certain tactical decisions at Manchester United. While some interpreted these as harsh critiques, Carrick views them as part of the passionate discourse surrounding the club’s performance. Scholes’ insights, grounded in his extensive experience, aim to push the team towards improvement rather than to disparage individuals.

Carrick’s Professionalism Amidst Public Scrutiny

In the high-pressure environment of Premier League football, public scrutiny is inevitable. Carrick, who transitioned from a celebrated player to a coaching role, understands the importance of maintaining composure. He stated that such feedback, even when blunt, is an opportunity for growth and reflection rather than a personal attack.

Recent Performance and Tactical Adjustments

Manchester United’s recent matches have sparked debate among fans and analysts alike. The team’s fluctuating form has led to calls for tactical shifts. Carrick has been actively involved in refining strategies, focusing on strengthening the midfield and enhancing defensive coordination. For instance, the integration of younger talents like Alejandro Garnacho has been a strategic move to inject energy and creativity into the squad.

The Role of Constructive Criticism in Football Development

Constructive criticism plays a vital role in the evolution of any football team. Scholes’ comments, while direct, reflect a broader culture of accountability within Manchester United. This culture encourages players and staff to continuously elevate their standards. Carrick’s acceptance of such feedback highlights his commitment to fostering a resilient and adaptive team environment.

Looking Ahead: Manchester United’s Ambitions

As the Premier League season progresses, Manchester United aims to solidify its position among the top contenders. Carrick’s leadership, combined with the club’s strategic recruitment and youth development, positions the team for a promising future. The coaching staff remains dedicated to addressing weaknesses and capitalizing on strengths to achieve consistent success.

In summary, Michael Carrick’s response to Paul Scholes’ critique exemplifies professionalism and a forward-thinking mindset. By embracing feedback and focusing on continuous improvement, Manchester United is poised to navigate the challenges ahead with resilience and ambition.
