Gold blasts past $5,100 to record high on safe-haven rush

by hassan January 26, 2026
written by hassan

Gold Prices Soar to Unprecedented Heights Amid Global Uncertainty

On Monday, January 26, gold prices surged past the $5,100 per ounce mark, reaching an all-time peak as investors sought refuge in the precious metal amid escalating geopolitical tensions. By 06:56 GMT, spot gold climbed 2.2% to $5,089.78 per ounce, having earlier touched a record $5,110.50. Similarly, U.S. gold futures for February delivery rose 2.2%, settling at $5,086.30 per ounce.

Historic Rally Driven by Safe-Haven Demand and Central Bank Activity

The precious metal experienced a remarkable 64% increase throughout 2025, marking its most significant annual surge since 1979. This rally has been fueled by heightened demand for safe-haven assets, expectations of a more accommodative U.S. monetary policy, and substantial central bank acquisitions. Notably, China extended its gold buying streak to fourteen consecutive months as of December, contributing to record inflows into gold-backed exchange-traded funds (ETFs).

Gold prices have consistently broken records over the past week and have already appreciated by over 18% in the current year, underscoring the metal’s growing appeal as a financial safeguard.

Political Instability Spurs Investor Flight to Gold

Market analysts attribute the recent surge in gold prices to a growing erosion of confidence in U.S. governance and assets, triggered by unpredictable policy moves from the Trump administration. Last week’s erratic decisions, including the withdrawal of tariff threats against European allies over Greenland and the announcement of a potential 100% tariff on Canada should it engage in trade with China, have unsettled investors. Additionally, threats of 200% tariffs on French wines and champagnes, aimed at pressuring President Emmanuel Macron to join a proposed “Board of Peace” initiative, have further intensified market jitters.

Kyle Rodda, a senior market analyst at Capital.com, remarked, “The current U.S. administration has fundamentally disrupted traditional market dynamics, prompting investors to seek gold as a reliable alternative.”

Currency Movements and Upcoming Federal Reserve Meeting Influence Gold Demand

On the currency front, the Japanese yen’s appreciation exerted downward pressure on the U.S. dollar on Monday. Market participants remain vigilant for potential interventions in the yen, while many investors have reduced their dollar holdings ahead of the Federal Reserve’s policy meeting scheduled for later this week. A softer dollar typically enhances gold’s attractiveness by making it more affordable for buyers using other currencies, thereby supporting higher gold prices.

Looking Ahead: Gold’s Role in a Volatile Economic Landscape

As global uncertainties persist, gold continues to solidify its status as a preferred asset for wealth preservation. With geopolitical tensions and economic policy unpredictability showing no signs of abating, the precious metal’s appeal is expected to remain robust. Investors and analysts alike are closely monitoring central bank activities and currency fluctuations, which will likely shape gold’s trajectory in the months ahead.

Chukwuma Soludo Orders Shutdown of Onitsha Main Market Over IPOB Sit-at-Home Compliance

by Ayodeji Onibalusi January 26, 2026
written by Ayodeji Onibalusi

Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Soludo has ordered the immediate shutdown of the Onitsha Main Market after traders reportedly complied with the illegal Monday sit-at-home directive issued by the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

The directive followed the circulation of a video showing the usually busy commercial hub largely deserted on Monday, in apparent obedience to the sit-at-home order. Governor Soludo, who has repeatedly warned against compliance with such directives, described the action as unacceptable and damaging to the state’s economy.

According to the state government, the closure is intended to enforce discipline, discourage future compliance with unlawful orders, and reaffirm the government’s stance that no non-state actor has the authority to shut down economic activities in Anambra.

Officials said the market will remain closed until further notice, pending engagement with market leadership and assurances that traders will fully resume business without yielding to intimidation.

The Anambra State Government has consistently maintained that sit-at-home orders threaten livelihoods, deepen poverty, and undermine public order, urging residents to resist fear and cooperate with security agencies.

by hassan January 25, 2026

Oyo State Palm Oil Legacy
Celebrating 50 Years of Oyo State: Tracing the Economic Foundations of a Regional Trailblazer

Marking its 50th anniversary, Oyo State offers a moment to revisit the economic forces that positioned it as a pioneering region long before its official establishment. At the heart of this economic heritage lies palm oil, a historically crucial commodity that not only powered colonial economies but continues to influence sustainable markets worldwide today.

The Historical Role of Palm Oil in Shaping Oyo’s Economy

Well before Nigeria gained independence, the communities now within Oyo State were deeply engaged in the cultivation, processing, and trade of palm oil. Originating from the former Western Region, this commodity was a major export that fulfilled the demands of European industries and helped establish early global trade networks. The palm oil industry generated significant wealth and spurred the creation of structured commercial systems, transportation routes, and vibrant marketplaces-cornerstones of the region’s contemporary economic landscape.

Traditional Knowledge and Economic Ingenuity

Oyo’s palm oil sector thrived on indigenous expertise. Time-honored refining techniques, cooperative labor models, and savvy trading practices were handed down through generations, enabling the region to maintain a dependable presence in international markets. This fusion of cultural heritage and entrepreneurial drive earned Oyo a reputation for productivity and economic innovation.

Contemporary Importance: Embracing Sustainability and Innovation

Today, the legacy of palm oil in Oyo State has taken on renewed significance. As the world increasingly prioritizes sustainable agriculture and responsible sourcing, palm oil remains a vital commodity. Oyo’s fertile lands, rich agricultural traditions, and growing emphasis on enhancing the value chain position the state to reclaim leadership-this time with a focus on environmental responsibility, technological advancement, and sustainable development.

Recent research reveals that adopting sustainable palm oil practices can cut deforestation by nearly 30%, underscoring the pivotal role regions like Oyo can play in harmonizing economic progress with ecological conservation.

Bridging History and Future Prospects: Oyo’s Persistent Economic Drive

The narrative of palm oil in Oyo State transcends history; it represents a continuous link between past accomplishments and future possibilities. It highlights the state’s enduring entrepreneurial spirit and its ability to adapt its economic strengths to meet changing global trends.

Future Outlook: Leveraging Heritage for New Growth

As Oyo State commemorates five decades of advancement, its legacy as an economic pioneer serves as a compelling reminder that sustainable growth is most effective when rooted in cultural identity. From the palm plantations that once fueled colonial industries to today’s markets demanding eco-conscious products, Oyo remains a leader-driving progress with foresight and determination.

At this pivotal juncture, Oyo is exceptionally well-positioned to transform its rich heritage into fresh opportunities, setting a vibrant example for Nigeria and the broader West African region.

This golden jubilee is more than a celebration-it is a moment for deep reflection on the enduring bond between the land and its people, a connection rooted in history, culture, and shared dreams.

Oyo State: More Than a Place, a Living Legacy

Oyo State’s significance extends beyond its borders, representing a tapestry woven from the aspirations, struggles, and triumphs of its inhabitants. It is a place where tradition meets progress, and where the spirit of perseverance continues to inspire generations. As a native son, I embrace this milestone with both humility and pride, recognizing the state’s role as a cornerstone of Nigeria’s cultural and historical landscape.

Its leadership and development over fifty years have laid pathways for future generations to soar.

While there remain goals yet to be achieved, the enduring spirit of Oyo State fuels our determination to preserve its dignity and advance its legacy. This journey is a collective one, where every citizen plays a vital role in shaping the future.

A Commitment to the Future

As I reflect on this milestone, I reaffirm my dedication to elevating Oyo State’s profile, celebrating its achievements, and contributing to its ongoing success. The phrase Ibadan ni mí, oba ni mí-“I am Ibadan, I am royalty”-embodies the responsibility to uphold honor, dignity, and grace in all endeavors.

With renewed vigor and steadfast resolve, I pledge to support the state’s journey toward greater heights, ensuring that its legacy endures for generations to come.

Ibadan and the Birth of Broadcasting: Oyo State’s Enduring Media Legacy

by hassan January 25, 2026
written by hassan

Oyo State at 50: Honoring a Broadcasting Legacy Rooted in Ibadan

As Oyo State commemorates its 50th anniversary, attention turns to a pivotal yet often overlooked chapter in its history-its groundbreaking contributions to Nigerian broadcasting. Central to this narrative is Ibadan, a city renowned for hosting one of Africa’s earliest and most influential radio stations.

The Origins of Broadcasting in Oyo State

The Broadcasting Corporation of Oyo State (BCOS), originally established as the Western Nigeria Broadcasting Service (WNBS) in the 1950s, stands as a testament to the state’s pioneering spirit in media. WNBS was instrumental in launching one of Africa’s first integrated radio and television services, setting a benchmark that influenced broadcasting standards across the continent.

Ibadan’s Integral Role in Nigeria’s Media Development

Ibadan’s broadcasting history is deeply intertwined with the evolution of Nigerian media. Serving the old Western Region, the city’s airwaves became a vital conduit for news, education, cultural expression, and entertainment. Long before the digital age, WNBS-and later BCOS-delivered a rich mix of programming including indigenous language broadcasts, political commentary, music, and drama, fostering a strong connection with its audience.

BCOS: A Cradle for Media Talent and National Influence

The significance of BCOS extends beyond its longevity; it has been a nurturing ground for countless broadcasters, journalists, actors, and media experts who have left indelible marks on both Nigerian and international media landscapes. The station earned a reputation as a reliable source of information during pivotal moments in Nigeria’s history, shaping public opinion and national discourse.

Oyo State’s Broadcasting Heritage: A Pillar of Cultural and Intellectual Identity

Marking five decades of statehood, Oyo’s rich broadcasting tradition underscores its role as a center of intellectual thought, cultural vibrancy, and innovation. Ibadan’s early adoption of mass communication technologies exemplifies a visionary approach to harnessing the power of information to influence societal progress.

From Analog Roots to Digital Frontiers

Although the media landscape has transformed dramatically with the rise of digital and multimedia platforms, the foundational work laid by BCOS and its predecessors remains profoundly relevant. Their legacy serves as a reminder that Oyo State was not just a participant in Nigeria’s growth but a key storyteller in the nation’s unfolding narrative.

Celebrating Voices That Transcend Boundaries

The 50th anniversary of Oyo State is also a tribute to the myriad voices, stories, and broadcasts that extended far beyond Ibadan’s borders, uniting communities and shaping a collective national identity.

Tonto Dikeh tearfully shares testimony of how she reconciled with her ex-husband, Olakunle Churchill, and allowed him into their son’s life (video)

by hassan January 25, 2026
written by hassan

How Tonto Dikeh Found Peace and Reunited Her Son with Ex-Husband Olakunle Churchill

Nollywood star Tonto Dikeh recently opened up about the emotional journey that led to her reconciliation with her former husband, Olakunle Churchill, and how this healing process has brought their son, King Andre, closer to his father.

A Decade of Struggle and Separation

In a deeply moving testimony shared during a church service, Tonto reflected on the painful decade marked by conflict, isolation, and public scrutiny. She described enduring “ten years of turmoil, loneliness, and public humiliation,” during which her son grew up without knowing his father’s presence. This prolonged hardship not only affected her personally but also cast a shadow over her family’s life.

The Turning Point: A Child’s Prayer

The catalyst for change came unexpectedly through her son’s heartfelt prayer. King Andre had asked God to help the embassy release his passport to his mother. Upon seeing this, Tonto realized it was time to reveal the truth to her son-that his passport was actually in the possession of his father, Olakunle Churchill. She explained:

“I had always told my son that his passport was with an embassy, never revealing that it was actually with his father. His father and I had been locked in a toxic, demonic battle that played out publicly.”

Remarkably, just two days after her son’s prayer, Churchill reached out, expressing his intention to send their son’s documents, including the passport, to Tonto. This gesture marked the beginning of a new chapter.

Honest Conversations and Healing

Following this breakthrough, Tonto sat down with King Andre to share the reality of his father’s absence. She recounted the conversation:

“I asked him if he had ever wondered where his dad was. He said yes, but he never asked because he felt I didn’t want to talk about it. I apologized and told him a simple story: a man and a woman met, had him, and then conflict arose. He was surprised, and I explained that the bitterness and toxicity between us affected him, and I was sorry. Then he asked if I had forgiven his father. I didn’t answer immediately, but he said he had forgiven him, though he was upset I hadn’t told him sooner. It was a moment of profound healing.”

This heartfelt exchange dissolved years of bitterness and resentment, replacing them with understanding and compassion. Tonto shared how she found herself praying for Churchill, despite the pain, and how even political figures had tried to intervene in their conflict.

From Estrangement to Respect

Today, Tonto describes her relationship with Churchill as one of mutual respect and friendship. She now addresses him with proper regard and maintains open communication, prioritizing their son’s well-being above past grievances.
