Armed Kidnappers Seize 14 Passengers on Utonkon–Okpoga Road in Benue State
At least fourteen individuals traveling along the Utonkon–Okpoga route in Benue State were abducted by armed assailants during an attack on a commercial bus. The vehicle was transporting passengers from Oju and Obi Local Government Areas en route to destinations in Nigeria’s western region.
Details of the Incident
The abduction took place at approximately 7:00 PM on Monday, February 9, near the road connecting Ado and Okpokwu Local Government Areas. According to eyewitness accounts, the bus was carrying sixteen Igede-speaking passengers when it was ambushed.
Comrade Jude Onwe, a youth leader from the Utonkon community, described the event, stating that the bus had departed from Iheijwo Market in Oju LGA and was heading toward Okpoga in Okpokwu LGA. The attackers intercepted the vehicle after it passed through the Utonkon–Ojapo/Okpoga stretch within Ado LGA.
Attackers’ Actions and Passenger Fate
Onwe reported that the gunmen forced the bus to stop and abducted fifteen passengers, dragging them into the nearby forested area. Tragically, one individual was fatally shot when the driver initially resisted stopping the vehicle. The kidnappers also confiscated the passengers’ mobile phones to prevent them from alerting family members or authorities.
Following the attack, the abandoned bus was recovered and taken to the Utonkon Police Station for investigation.
Official Response from Benue State Police
The Benue State Police Command has officially acknowledged the kidnapping incident. DSP Udeme Edet, the police spokesperson, confirmed the abduction of fourteen passengers traveling from the Igede regions of Oju and Obi LGAs. He assured the public that a thorough investigation is underway and that security forces are actively managing the situation.
“The abduction on Okpokwu road is confirmed. We are currently investigating the matter and remain vigilant to resolve the case,” said DSP Edet.

Kidnapping for ransom has become an alarming security challenge in various parts of Nigeria, including Benue State. According to recent data from the Nigerian Security Tracker, incidents of abduction have surged by over 30% in the past year, affecting commuters and residents alike.
