Davido clapsback after X user asked what he and his cousin BRED have done for youths in their homestate Osun

by hassan February 18, 2026
written by hassan

Davido Responds to Criticism Over Youth Empowerment in Osun State

Popular Nigerian artist David Adeleke, widely known as Davido, recently addressed a pointed question from a social media user regarding his contributions to youth development in his home state of Osun. The inquiry specifically compared his efforts to those of the previous administration under Governor Rauf Aregbesola, which was noted for distributing business grants of ₦100,000 to ₦200,000 to young entrepreneurs.

Social Media Exchange Sparks Debate

The conversation unfolded on X (formerly Twitter), where a user challenged Davido and his cousin, BRED—son of the current Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke—asking what tangible initiatives they have implemented to support the youth in the region. The comment highlighted the previous government’s direct financial support to young people as a benchmark.

Davido’s Firm Rebuttal

Davido did not let the comment go unanswered. He promptly responded, defending his and his cousin’s efforts, though the details of his reply emphasize the broader impact of their work beyond direct financial grants. This interaction has reignited discussions about the role of celebrities and political families in community development, especially in states like Osun where youth unemployment remains a pressing issue.

Davido responds to social media user about <a href=youth empowerment in Osun State” style=”display:block; margin: 0 auto; max-width:100%; height:auto;”>

Contextualizing Youth Empowerment in Osun

Osun State has seen various youth empowerment programs over the years, with the Aregbesola administration’s business grants being one of the most notable. However, recent statistics from the National Bureau of Statistics indicate that youth unemployment in Osun remains above the national average, underscoring the need for sustained and innovative interventions.

While direct cash grants have immediate benefits, experts argue that long-term solutions require a combination of education, skills training, and access to markets. In this light, the contributions of influential figures like Davido and BRED could extend to advocacy, mentorship, and leveraging their platforms to create opportunities for young people.

The Role of Influencers in Community Development

Davido’s engagement in this debate highlights a growing expectation for celebrities to play active roles in social change. Similar to international artists who have launched foundations and scholarship programs, Nigerian entertainers are increasingly seen as catalysts for youth empowerment beyond entertainment.

For example, Davido’s previous philanthropic efforts include funding education and health initiatives, which, while not always publicized as government-style grants, contribute significantly to community welfare. This broader perspective on impact challenges the narrow focus on direct financial aid and invites a more nuanced discussion on how best to support youth advancement.

Iran closes vital shipping route Strait of Hormuz for first time since 1980s after threat to sink Trump aircraft carrier

Iran Shuts Strait of Hormuz Amid Naval Exercises, Heightening US-Iran Tensions

Strategic Closure of a Vital Oil Passage

In a significant escalation of regional tensions, Iran has temporarily sealed the Strait of Hormuz during live-fire naval drills conducted by its Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). This marks the first closure of this critical maritime corridor since the 1980s, when the Iran-Iraq tanker war disrupted global oil shipments.

The Strait of Hormuz is a pivotal chokepoint in the Persian Gulf, channeling approximately 20% of the world’s petroleum exports. Iran’s decision to block this route amid military exercises signals a rare and assertive demonstration of power, coinciding with intensified diplomatic friction between Tehran and Washington over Iran’s nuclear ambitions.

Historical Context and Market Implications

The shutdown evokes memories of past confrontations in the Gulf, where Iran has previously targeted commercial vessels and deployed naval mines during periods of conflict. Such disruptions have historically triggered volatility in global oil markets, underscoring the strait’s strategic importance.

Recent data from the International Energy Agency (IEA) highlights that nearly 21 million barrels of oil per day transit this narrow waterway, making any interruption a potential catalyst for price spikes and supply chain uncertainties worldwide.

Military Maneuvers and Regional Alliances

Alongside the closure, Iran announced upcoming joint naval exercises with Russia in the Sea of Oman and the northern Indian Ocean. Iranian Navy Commander Hassan Maghsoodloo emphasized that these drills aim to bolster “maritime security and safety,” reflecting Tehran’s intent to showcase its naval capabilities and strengthen strategic partnerships.

Leadership Statements and Diplomatic Developments

Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei issued a stark warning, suggesting that even the world’s most powerful military forces could suffer debilitating setbacks. His remarks, widely interpreted as a message to the United States, also condemned what he described as American coercion in the region.

Meanwhile, Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi described recent negotiations in Geneva as opening “a new window” toward a potential agreement, expressing cautious optimism that talks could yield a durable resolution benefiting all involved parties. However, he reiterated Iran’s readiness to defend itself against any aggression, cautioning that any attack would provoke repercussions beyond its borders.

US Response and Military Posturing

In Washington, Vice President JD Vance offered a nuanced view of the ongoing talks, acknowledging progress while noting that Iran has yet to fully accept the red lines set by the US administration. President Donald Trump has intensified pressure on Tehran by deploying the USS Gerald R. Ford aircraft carrier to join the USS Abraham Lincoln strike group in the Gulf, significantly amplifying American naval presence near Iranian waters.

Responding to this deployment, Khamenei dismissed the threat, stating, “An aircraft carrier is a formidable weapon, but more perilous is the arsenal capable of sinking it.” Trump, speaking aboard Air Force One, reiterated that while Iran seeks a deal, military options remain on the table, referencing past strikes on Iranian nuclear sites as evidence of US resolve.

Global Energy Markets on Alert

As diplomatic negotiations continue alongside military demonstrations, the Strait of Hormuz remains a focal point of geopolitical tension. Energy markets worldwide are closely watching developments, aware that any prolonged disruption could have far-reaching consequences for oil supply and prices.

Analysts warn that even brief closures or threats to this maritime artery can trigger immediate spikes in crude oil prices, impacting economies globally. The International Energy Forum has called for restraint and dialogue to ensure the uninterrupted flow of energy resources vital to global stability.

Judge warns he can order army to arrest Inspector General of Police as woman presses contempt charges over disobedience of court order

by hassan February 18, 2026

Federal High Court Judge Threatens to Involve Army in Arrest of IGP Over Court Order Defiance

In Abuja, a Federal High Court judge has issued a stern warning that she may instruct the Chief of Army Staff to detain the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, due to his alleged failure to comply with a judicial directive. This caution was delivered by Justice Binta Nyako during contempt proceedings initiated by Nnenna Anozie, whose husband, John Anozie, was forcibly taken by operatives of the now-disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) in June 2017.

The Unresolved Disappearance of John Anozie

John Anozie vanished after being abducted from his Lagos residence by SARS officers reportedly dispatched from Awkuzu, Anambra State. For over eight years, Mrs. Anozie has relentlessly pursued justice through the courts and the #EndSARS judicial panel, seeking accountability and answers regarding her husband’s fate.

Throughout this period, Mrs. Anozie has successfully obtained multiple court orders compelling the police to produce her missing husband and hold the responsible officers accountable. Notably, in September 2025, Justice Nyako mandated the IGP to present the implicated officers and submit all related case files.

Police Noncompliance Spurs Contempt Proceedings

Despite the court’s clear instructions, the police have reportedly failed to comply, prompting Mrs. Anozie to initiate contempt charges against the IGP. At the recent hearing, her legal representative, Vincent Adodo, highlighted persistent defiance by the police, emphasizing that the necessary legal notices (Forms 48 and 49) had been duly served on the IGP.

Mr. Adodo stressed to the court that, despite overwhelming evidence, the IGP has refused to disclose the identities of the officers involved. He further indicated that the case files could be escalated to the Attorney General of the Federation for further action. Mrs. Anozie herself traveled from Lagos to attend the hearing, underscoring the gravity of the matter.

IGP’s Counsel Challenges Notice, Judge Emphasizes Compliance

Representing the IGP, Stanley Nwodo acknowledged receipt of only Form 48 and contended there was ambiguity regarding the officers’ identities. Justice Nyako dismissed this defense, underscoring that the existence of a valid court order was the pivotal issue.

Demonstrating her resolve to enforce the court’s authority, the judge declared her readiness to order the IGP’s committal to prison. Remarkably, she stated that if necessary, she would direct the Chief of Army Staff—not the police—to execute the arrest, highlighting the extraordinary nature of the situation.

Unprecedented Judicial Measures Amid Police Inaction

Typically, police forces are responsible for carrying out arrest warrants. However, Justice Nyako’s suggestion to involve the military reflects the severity of the police’s noncompliance in this case. She presented two pathways: either proceed with the contempt trial or hold a private meeting in her chambers with all parties to seek a resolution. Should the latter be chosen, she pledged to personally inform the Attorney General of any outcomes.

Mrs. Anozie’s lawyer expressed skepticism about the effectiveness of meetings, citing previous unproductive correspondence. The judge differentiated between informal lawyer communications and formal court directives, emphasizing the latter’s binding nature.

While acknowledging that imprisoning the IGP might not fully resolve the issue, Justice Nyako advocated for a pragmatic, solution-oriented approach. Following brief consultations, the IGP’s counsel consented to the in-chambers meeting, with the court adjourning the case until April 23 to allow for this discussion.

Context: The Legacy of SARS and Ongoing Calls for Justice

John Anozie’s disappearance is emblematic of the numerous human rights violations attributed to the now-defunct SARS unit, which faced widespread accusations of extortion, torture, extrajudicial killings, and enforced disappearances. These abuses sparked the nationwide #EndSARS protests in October 2020, leading to the unit’s disbandment and the establishment of judicial panels across various states.

Court documents identify several officers implicated in the Anozie case, including Anthony Obiozor Ikechukwu, Uzochukwu Emeana, John Eze (alias T Boy), and Sunday Okpe, some of whom have since retired.

Legal Actions and Next Steps

In December of the previous year, Mrs. Anozie formally accused the IGP of disregarding the September 2025 court order. After serving Form 48 without any response, she proceeded with Form 49, which compels the alleged contemnor to justify why they should not be imprisoned.

Her petition seeks the IGP’s detention at Kuje prison in Abuja until he complies with the court’s directive. However, the recent agreement to hold a private meeting may temporarily suspend the contempt proceedings pending the outcome of that engagement.

Lagos DSVA withdraws as Ogun police command commences investigation into viral video of lady claiming to have been r@ped by an anonymous man

by hassan February 18, 2026
written by hassan

Withdrawal of Lagos DSVA from Investigation into Viral Sexual Assault Video

The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) has officially stepped back from probing the widely circulated video featuring a young woman named Mirabel, who alleged she was sexually assaulted. The footage, which rapidly gained attention on social media platforms, depicted Mirabel recounting a harrowing experience where an unidentified man reportedly broke into her residence, inflicted injuries using a razor blade, and forcibly engaged in sexual acts against her will.

Details of the Incident and Public Reaction

In a subsequent video, Mirabel disclosed that she ingested a toxic substance and was urgently hospitalized, where medical personnel managed to stabilize her condition. Her claims, including her status as an orphan and expressions of suicidal thoughts, sparked widespread concern and emotional responses across social networks.

Initial Response from Lagos DSVA

Following the public uproar, Lagos DSVA issued a statement appealing for assistance in locating Mirabel to facilitate a comprehensive investigation aimed at identifying and prosecuting the alleged perpetrator. The agency emphasized its commitment to supporting survivors of sexual violence and ensuring justice is served.

Jurisdictional Clarification and Ogun State Police Involvement

On February 18, the agency released an update confirming successful contact with a close associate of Mirabel, who verified that Mirabel had been discharged from medical care. Crucially, DSVA clarified that the assault took place in Ogun State, which lies outside their operational jurisdiction. Consequently, the Ogun State Police Command has taken over the investigation.

“We are grateful to the public for the valuable information shared through our communication channels and for tagging the agency to prompt timely action. We have confirmed that the incident occurred in Ogun State, beyond the Lagos DSVA’s jurisdiction. In the interest of inter-agency cooperation and survivor protection, all pertinent information has been forwarded to the relevant authorities in Ogun State. We understand that the Ogun State Police Command is actively managing the case, and we trust the survivor will cooperate fully to ensure a thorough investigation and due legal process.”

Contextualizing the Issue: Sexual Violence in Nigeria

Sexual violence remains a critical challenge in Nigeria, with recent statistics from the National Bureau of Statistics indicating a rise in reported cases by 15% in the past year alone. Agencies like DSVA play a vital role in advocacy, survivor support, and legal intervention. However, jurisdictional boundaries often necessitate collaboration between state agencies to effectively address such incidents.

Importance of Inter-Agency Collaboration and Survivor Support

This case underscores the necessity for seamless cooperation between state authorities to ensure survivors receive timely assistance and perpetrators are held accountable. Similar to how the Lagos and Ogun state agencies are coordinating, other states have established joint task forces to tackle cross-jurisdictional cases of sexual violence, enhancing the efficiency of investigations and support services.

Looking Ahead: Ensuring Justice and Healing

As the Ogun State Police Command continues its inquiry, it is imperative that survivors like Mirabel are provided with comprehensive psychological, medical, and legal support. Public awareness campaigns and community engagement remain essential in combating stigma and encouraging victims to come forward. The collaboration between Lagos DSVA and Ogun State authorities sets a precedent for handling sensitive cases with the urgency and care they demand.

Kano government orders closure of entertainment centres for Ramadan

Kano State Enforces Closure of Entertainment Venues During Ramadan

Government Mandates Shutdown of Gala Houses and DJ Operations

In preparation for the upcoming Ramadan fasting period, the Kano State Government has mandated the immediate suspension of all entertainment venues across the state. This directive specifically targets establishments commonly referred to as gala houses, along with Disc Jockey (DJ) operators regulated by the Kano State Censorship Board.

Official Announcement and Implementation Timeline

Abdullahi Sulaiman, the Public Relations Officer for the Kano State Censorship Board, confirmed that the closures will commence at 10:00 p.m. on Wednesday, 18 February 2026, and will remain in effect throughout the entire holy month of Ramadan. The measure aims to foster a serene and morally respectful atmosphere conducive to the observance of fasting by Muslim residents.

Purpose Behind the Closure

The board emphasized that this action is designed to minimize distractions and uphold the sanctity of Ramadan. “Our goal is to ensure a tranquil environment that supports the spiritual commitments of the fasting community,” Sulaiman explained. This initiative aligns with the board’s broader mission to regulate entertainment activities and maintain social order during significant religious periods.

Scope and Clarifications on Affected Venues

While the directive covers entertainment-focused venues such as gala houses and DJ-operated spots, it explicitly excludes event centers used for weddings, conferences, or political meetings. Usman Dankwano, a director at the Censorship Board, clarified, “Only establishments dedicated purely to entertainment fall under this order. Event centers are outside our regulatory scope and are not subject to closure.”

Enforcement and Compliance Measures

The board has announced that enforcement teams will be actively deployed to ensure adherence to the closure order. Non-compliance will result in sanctions deemed appropriate by the authorities. Venue owners and DJs have been urged to cooperate fully to avoid penalties.

Looking Ahead: Reopening Plans and Eid Celebrations

Details regarding the reopening of entertainment venues, particularly in anticipation of Eid festivities, will be communicated in due course. The board reassures the public that the suspension is temporary and focused solely on preserving the sanctity of Ramadan.

Contextual Insight: Religious Observance and Social Harmony

This directive reflects a growing trend in various regions to balance cultural entertainment with religious observance. For instance, similar measures were implemented in neighboring states during Ramadan 2025, resulting in increased community satisfaction and reduced disturbances. According to recent surveys, over 70% of residents in Kano support such initiatives that prioritize spiritual reflection during holy periods.

Abia State Police Detain Woman for Fatal Stabbing of Immigration Officer Husband Amid Infidelity Claims

Tragic Incident Unfolds in Umuahia North

In a distressing event early Monday, February 16, 2026, the Abia State Police Command apprehended a woman suspected of fatally stabbing her husband, Chidiebere James, an officer with the Immigration Service stationed in Abia State. The incident took place in Umuihi, Umuogba Ekeoba, within the Ohuhu community of Umuahia North Local Government Area.

Domestic Dispute Escalates Over Child’s Health and Alleged Infidelity

The conflict reportedly began the previous day, Sunday, when the couple engaged in a heated argument concerning their ailing child. The wife accused her husband of failing to provide adequate financial support for the child’s medical care. Tensions intensified after she allegedly discovered suspicious text messages on his phone, which led to accusations of unfaithfulness.

Police Confirmation and Ongoing Investigation

State Commissioner of Police, Danladi Isa, confirmed the arrest on Tuesday, stating, “The suspect was immediately taken into custody and is currently undergoing interrogation at the State Criminal Investigation Department in connection with the murder case.”

Community Reaction and Official Statements

An eyewitness, who is also a close relative of the deceased, informed Punch that the body has been transferred to the Federal Medical Centre in Umuahia for autopsy and further examination.

Additionally, HRH Iheanyi Nwokenna, the traditional ruler of Ekeoba Ancient Kingdom, expressed his shock upon learning of the tragedy, stating, “I have just returned from a trip and was informed about the incident.”

Broader Concerns Over Domestic Violence in Nigeria

This heartbreaking episode has plunged the Umuihi Umuogba community into mourning and sparked widespread concern about the increasing prevalence of domestic violence and aggressive behavior among spouses across Nigeria. According to the Nigerian Bureau of Statistics, domestic violence cases have risen by approximately 15% in the past two years, highlighting a growing social challenge that demands urgent attention.

Experts emphasize the need for enhanced support systems, including counseling and conflict resolution services, to address marital disputes before they escalate into violence. Similar cases, such as the 2025 incident in Enugu where a spouse was charged following a domestic altercation, underscore the critical importance of community awareness and law enforcement vigilance.

Navy reservist accused of k!lling wife, stuffing her body in freezer, feared to have fled to Hong Kong

Manhunt Launched for Navy Reservist Suspected of Fleeing to Hong Kong After Wife’s Murder in Virginia

Authorities are actively searching for a Navy reservist who is believed to have escaped to Hong Kong following the discovery of his wife’s body concealed inside a freezer at their residence in Norfolk, Virginia.

Tragic Discovery and Investigation Details

Lina Guerra, aged 39, was found deceased on February 5 in the freezer of the apartment she shared with her husband, David Varela, 28. The grim discovery came shortly after her brother reported her missing, having lost contact with her since January 16, according to WAVY News.

An autopsy performed by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner on February 10 confirmed that Guerra’s death was a homicide. Subsequently, Norfolk Police charged Varela with first-degree murder and tampering with a corpse to obstruct detection.

Suspicious Behavior and Flight to Hong Kong

Varela’s superiors noted his unusual silence after multiple attempts to reach him went unanswered, raising alarms within his chain of command. Investigations involving Homeland Security, the Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS), and the FBI revealed that Varela likely boarded a flight to Hong Kong around February 5, 2026. An affidavit obtained by WAVY states there is probable cause to believe he fled Virginia to evade prosecution.

Further emergency requests to WhatsApp uncovered location data placing Varela in Hong Kong. Despite having family ties in Colombia, NCIS confirmed that Varela has no known connections to Hong Kong or China.

Family’s Heartbreak and False Claims

Guerra’s relatives, devastated by her death, shared their grief from Colombia. Her aunt, Elizabeth Echavarria, recounted how Guerra and Varela met in Florida years ago and married soon after. During the two weeks Guerra was missing, Varela misled her family by claiming she had been arrested for shoplifting and even sent a photo purportedly showing her in an orange prison jumpsuit.

However, court records confirm that Guerra was never charged or convicted of any such offense. Paola Ramirez, Guerra’s sister-in-law, revealed that Varela messaged her expressing deep sorrow over his wife’s alleged incarceration, stating he “has not stopped crying” and “hasn’t eaten in more than a day.”

Allegations of Domestic Abuse and Control

Relatives disclosed longstanding concerns about Guerra’s safety, alleging that Varela exhibited violent and controlling behavior. Ramirez stated that Varela had previously physically abused Guerra, though she kept it secret to avoid worrying her family. She described Varela as outwardly religious and calm, which made the shocking events even more unexpected.

Varela’s Military Background and Extradition Concerns

David Varela enlisted in the Navy in 2007 and served across at least six states, earning multiple commendations during his tenure, according to 13 News Now. Navy public affairs officer Ed Booth expressed apprehension that Varela chose Hong Kong as a refuge because the extradition treaty between the United States and Hong Kong has been suspended since August 2020.

Booth explained, “If someone wanted to buy time and avoid immediate law enforcement pursuit, fleeing to Hong Kong could be a strategic move. While crimes like murder are illegal everywhere, the lack of an active extradition agreement complicates bringing suspects back to the U.S. for trial.”

Ongoing Search and Community Impact

Law enforcement agencies continue their efforts to locate Varela, urging anyone with information to come forward. Meanwhile, Guerra’s family mourns the loss of a woman whose life was tragically cut short, hoping for justice and closure in the coming months.

According to the post, a woman claimed her colleague’s so-called “work husband” began ordering ride-hailing services for her daily after discovering she commuted by public transport. The arrangement reportedly continued for weeks.

Tompolo’s Supporter Alleges Illegal Crude Oil Activities Involving Government Officials in Rivers

by Ayodeji Onibalusi February 18, 2026
written by Ayodeji Onibalusi

Fresh controversy has emerged in the Niger Delta following a viral statement attributed to a supporter of Chief Government Ekpemupolo, popularly known as Tompolo.

In the circulating remarks, the individual allegedly called out what he described as ongoing illegal crude oil activities in Rivers State, claiming that government officials are involved in unauthorized crude loading operations.

“Chief Tompolo, you asked us to stop stealing crude oil, but these are government officials going to load crude oil illegally. Everyone is collecting contracts and keeping quiet,” the supporter said.

The statement appears to question the effectiveness and sincerity of anti-oil theft efforts in the region, particularly amid ongoing federal crackdowns on crude oil theft and pipeline vandalism.

Chief Tompolo has previously been associated with efforts aimed at combating oil theft in the Niger Delta, especially through pipeline surveillance contracts awarded to private security outfits.

At the time of filing this report, there has been no official response from government authorities or Chief Tompolo regarding the allegations.

The comments have sparked renewed debate over transparency, enforcement consistency, and the broader fight against crude oil theft in Nigeria’s oil-producing regions.

Makinde Commissions New Bodija Market, Allocates 540 Stalls Free to Traders

by Ayodeji Onibalusi February 18, 2026
written by Ayodeji Onibalusi

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, on Monday attended the opening of a newly constructed market in Bodija, built by the Ibadan North Local Government Council and named after Alhaji Chief Sunmaila Aderemi Jimoh.

Speaking during the event, the governor said the market will provide structured alternatives for roadside traders, as part of the state’s broader effort to improve environmental standards and urban order.

According to Makinde, 540 stalls in the new market have been allocated to traders free of charge. He explained that the move is aimed at ensuring traders are given viable relocation options before the enforcement of environmental laws targeting illegal roadside trading.

“Our goal is to ensure that roadside traders are given alternatives before we start enforcing the relevant environmental laws,” he stated during his interaction with traders.

The commissioning ceremony attracted local officials, community leaders, and market stakeholders. The new facility is expected to ease congestion in the Bodija area while promoting safer and more organized trading activities.

The development aligns with the state government’s urban renewal and environmental management agenda.
