Community Outcry in Eleyewo Following Couple’s Kidnapping by Armed Bandits
On the morning of Saturday, February 21, 2026, residents of Eleyewo community in Akure North Local Government Area staged a vigorous protest in response to the recent abduction of a local couple by armed criminals.
Details of the Abduction Incident
The victims, Mr. Jamiu Olawale and his wife, were forcibly taken during a violent raid on their neighborhood late Friday night, February 20. The attack also resulted in a neighbor, Mr. Patrick Ilumaro, sustaining a gunshot injury.
Community Demonstrations and Road Blockade
In a show of solidarity and frustration, the community members blocked the Akure-Owo expressway, chanting protest songs for several hours. The police eventually intervened to clear the highway and restore traffic flow.
Ransom Demand and Family’s Plight
A close family member disclosed that the kidnappers have reached out to the family, demanding a hefty ransom of ₦80 million for the safe return of the couple. The kidnappers specified ₦40 million for each individual’s release.
Official Statement from Security Authorities
Command spokesperson Abayomi Jimoh confirmed the incident occurred around 9:45 p.m. on February 20. According to him, the couple had just returned home in their ash-colored Toyota Camry from their shop when assailants emerged from nearby bushes and launched the attack.
“The gunmen abducted Mr. Jamiu Olawale and his wife, taking them to an undisclosed location. During the assault, their neighbor, Mr. Patrick Ilumaro, who was seated outside his home, was shot and is currently receiving medical care,” Jimoh stated.
Context and Broader Security Concerns
This incident highlights the escalating security challenges faced by communities in Ondo State and across Nigeria. According to recent data from the Nigerian Security Tracker, kidnappings have surged by over 30% in the past year, with ransom demands frequently reaching tens of millions of naira.
Similar cases in neighboring states have seen communities mobilize protests and call for enhanced government intervention. For instance, in Ekiti State last month, residents rallied after a series of kidnappings disrupted local businesses and schools.
Community Resilience and Calls for Action
Residents of Eleyewo are urging state and federal authorities to intensify efforts to combat banditry and ensure the safe return of the abducted couple. The protest underscores the urgent need for improved security measures and community policing initiatives to protect vulnerable populations.
