In a coordinated operation between the Akwa Ibom State Police Command and marine enforcement units, a suspected militant named Samuel Geoffrey was apprehended for his alleged involvement in maritime piracy and kidnapping activities in Ibaka, located within the Mbo Local Government Area.
Details of the Arrest and Ongoing Manhunt
State Commissioner of Police, CP Baba Azare, revealed during a press briefing in Uyo on Tuesday, November 4, 2025, that the suspect was taken into custody on November 3 at approximately 11:45 a.m. Meanwhile, a traditional ruler believed to be collaborating with Geoffrey managed to evade arrest when security forces raided his residence.
CP Azare emphasized that the police have intensified efforts to locate and apprehend the monarch, who is suspected of possessing equipment used in the militant’s illegal operations.
Recovered Equipment and Evidence
Following the raid on the traditional ruler’s temporary dwelling, authorities seized a variety of items linked to piracy activities. These included marine engines of various horsepower ratings-one 40HP, two 15HP, and one 8HP-along with four power heads, gearboxes, propellers, and engine covers. Additional confiscated items comprised a Snow Sea deep freezer, three generators, and several household goods such as brand-new toilet seats and sinks, a sewing machine, and personal belongings of a victim identified as Chibuike Vincent Awah from Onitsha, Anambra State.
Confession and Further Investigations
During interrogation, Samuel Geoffrey admitted to his active role in sea piracy and kidnapping. He disclosed that his rifle was held by Kingdom Bane, the Village Head of Ine Eyoabasi Fishing Village. Upon receiving this information, police units swiftly moved to the village, but the Village Head escaped before they could detain him.
Additional Crackdown on Illegal Arms Manufacturing
In a related development, the Akwa Ibom Police Command also dismantled an illicit gun production workshop in Ekriti Itam Village, Itu Local Government Area. Acting on credible intelligence, officers arrested two individuals, Aniekan Aniedi (39) and Ubong Udofia (35), on October 24, 2025.
Confiscated items from the illegal factory included three homemade firearms, metal pipes, iron rods, copper wiring, gun butts fashioned from flat metal plates, a welding machine, an electric screwdriver, and a filing machine. This operation highlights ongoing efforts to curb the proliferation of illegal weapons in the region.
Next Steps and Legal Proceedings
CP Azare confirmed that Samuel Geoffrey will soon face prosecution in court. Meanwhile, the search for the fugitive traditional ruler continues, with authorities urging anyone with information on his whereabouts to come forward.
