UNICEF Condemns Violent Attack on Kebbi School
The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has expressed deep concern following the violent assault on Government Girls Secondary School in Maga, Kebbi State, which occurred on Monday, November 17. This tragic event involved armed assailants targeting the educational institution, resulting in loss of life and abduction of students.
Details of the Incident and Immediate Impact
During the attack, the school’s vice principal, identified as Hassan, was fatally shot. Additionally, 25 female students were forcibly taken from the school premises and remain missing, with their whereabouts still unknown. This incident highlights the persistent threats faced by educational environments in regions affected by insecurity.
UNICEF’s Call for Enhanced Child Protection Measures
In a statement delivered by Sussan Akila, UNICEF Nigeria‘s Communication Specialist, the organization emphasized the critical need to safeguard children, educators, and school facilities from such violent acts. “We stand in solidarity with the affected community during this challenging period,” Akila stated. “We urgently call for the immediate release of the abducted students. Educational institutions and their staff must be shielded from violence under both national and international laws. Perpetrators of these crimes should face justice accordingly.”
