UNICEF Condemns Violent Attack on Kebbi School
The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has expressed deep concern following the violent assault on Government Girls Secondary School in Maga, Kebbi State, which occurred on Monday, November 17. This tragic event involved armed assailants targeting the educational institution, resulting in loss of life and abduction of students.
Details of the Incident and Immediate Impact
During the attack, the school’s vice principal, identified as Hassan, was fatally shot. Additionally, 25 female students were forcibly taken from the school premises and remain missing, with their whereabouts still unknown. This incident highlights the persistent threats faced by educational environments in regions affected by insecurity.
UNICEF’s Call for Enhanced Child Protection Measures
In a statement delivered by Sussan Akila, UNICEF Nigeria‘s Communication Specialist, the organization emphasized the critical need to safeguard children, educators, and school facilities from such violent acts. Akila extended condolences to the families of the victims and wished a speedy recovery to those injured during the attack.
“We stand in solidarity with the affected community during this challenging period,” Akila stated. “We urgently call for the immediate release of the abducted students. Educational institutions and their staff must be shielded from violence under both national and international laws. Perpetrators of these crimes should face justice accordingly.”
Promoting Safe Learning Environments Through Policy and Collaboration
Highlighting ongoing efforts, Akila referenced Nigeria’s endorsement of the Safe Schools Declaration in 2015-a global commitment aimed at protecting schools and universities from attacks during conflicts. This framework outlines practical strategies to maintain the civilian status of educational facilities and ensure uninterrupted access to learning.
UNICEF continues to collaborate with government agencies, civil society organizations, and local communities to bolster child protection systems nationwide. These partnerships focus on creating secure, inclusive educational settings that prevent future tragedies and foster resilience among students.
Education Without Fear: A Non-Negotiable Right
“Every child deserves to pursue education free from danger,” Akila affirmed. “It is imperative that all stakeholders intensify efforts to guarantee safe schooling environments, so no student has to face the threat of violence while learning.”
Contextualizing the Crisis: A Growing Concern
Recent data from the Global Coalition to Protect Education from Attack (GCPEA) indicates a troubling rise in school-related violence worldwide, with over 1,200 documented attacks in 2023 alone. Nigeria remains one of the countries most affected by such incidents, underscoring the urgency of implementing robust protective measures.
Similar kidnappings, such as the 2014 Chibok schoolgirls abduction, have drawn international attention to the vulnerability of students in conflict zones. These events reinforce the necessity for comprehensive strategies that combine security, community engagement, and policy enforcement to safeguard education.
