According to reports reaching Oyogist.com, the Algorand Foundation announced on Monday that it will dim the lights in Times Square on Thursday, April 21.
The foundation said the event would showcase its contribution to Blockchain development.
Staci Warden, CEO of the Algorand Foundation, said via email that the purpose of the event is to clear up rumors about the impact of blockchain technology on carbon emissions.
“Algorand will rent billboards with calls to action from environmentalists. It will then turn off the lights for an hour starting at 8 p.m. ET, coinciding with Earth Day on April 22, the newsletter read.
It also aims to bring awareness to the environmental cost of Times Square billboards themselves.
According to Algorand, closing Times Square for an hour could save 6,500 kilowatt-hours of electricity.
Warden said that the number equates to 350 million transactions on the Algorand blockchain.
