The anticipation among sci-fi and thriller fans has officially been brought to light following the release of Netflix and legendary Japanese studio Toho new series, Human Vapor.
The eight episode series which premiered globally on July 2, 2026, is quickly becoming one of the most talked-about streaming events of the year—and it is easy to see why fans are already captivated.
Based on Toho’s cult-classic 1960 film The Human Vapor, this modern reboot reimagines the story from the ground up, blending mind-bending sci-fi horror with a high-stakes detective chase.
The premise of the show has immediately hooked audiences. The plot centers around a mysterious entity known as the “Human Vapor”—a man who possesses the terrifying ability to transform his body into gas, allowing him to slip through any physical barrier.
Rather than hiding in the shadows, the Human Vapor turns his horrific crimes into a media spectacle. As seen in the newly released trailer, he brazenly claims responsibility for a live-television murder and warns the public of his next targets ahead of time. The series follows veteran detective Kenji Okamoto (played by Shun Oguri) and relentless reporter Kyoko Kono (Yu Aoi) as they try to catch a formless killer who is always one step ahead.
