Former Kano State Governor and 2023 presidential candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has announced his resignation from the party with immediate effect.

In a press statement dated March 29, 2026, Kwankwaso expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve as the party’s National Leader and presidential flagbearer during the 2023 general elections, describing his time in the NNPP as an honour and privilege.

He noted that his decision to leave the party was not an easy one but was influenced by the current direction of Nigeria’s political landscape.

“Considering the current trajectory of the nation’s political landscape, which calls for strategic realignment, I have found it necessary to identify with another political platform that offers the best opportunity to effectively change the nation,” he stated.

Kwankwaso also appreciated the leadership of the party, including the National Chairman, Ajiji Ahmed, the National Working Committee, and members across all levels, as well as supporters of the Kwankwasiyya Movement.

He added that his commitment to national development remains unwavering and expressed hope for continued collaboration toward building a more prosperous Nigeria.

The resignation is expected to have significant implications for Nigeria’s political dynamics ahead of future elections, as attention now shifts to Kwankwaso’s next political move.
