Conviction of Nigerian Man for Sexual Assault on UK Trains

Esosa Eguakin, a 31-year-old man from Coventry, has been sentenced to two years in prison after admitting to sexually assaulting two women on trains traveling from Hampshire to London. The British Transport Police (BTP) led the investigation that culminated in his conviction.

Details of the Offenses and Court Proceedings

At Guildford Crown Court on February 10, 2026, Eguakin pleaded guilty to two counts of sexual assault. In addition to his prison term, he was issued a five-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO). This order restricts him from engaging in specific behaviors, including sitting or standing next to or opposite any woman traveling alone.

Chronology of the Incidents

The first assault occurred on August 21, 2025, during an early morning train journey from Fratton to London Waterloo. Eguakin deliberately positioned himself behind a woman in her 30s and committed the assault. The second incident took place on October 6, 2025, shortly after 6 a.m., on a train from Eastleigh to London Waterloo. When confronted by the victim, Eguakin falsely claimed he was reaching for a dropped phone but refused to move away.

Intervention and Arrest

An off-duty police officer witnessed the confrontation and intervened, escorting Eguakin off the train at Woking station. The officer detained him until BTP officers arrived to take him into custody. Subsequent investigations by BTP detectives led to formal charges being filed against Eguakin.

Police Statement and Public Appeal

Detective Constable David Stewart described Eguakin’s actions as predatory and profoundly distressing for the victims. He emphasized that public safety on trains is paramount and praised the bravery of the victims and the quick response of the off-duty officer. Stewart urged anyone who experiences or witnesses sexual offenses on trains or at stations to report incidents promptly by texting 61016 or calling 999 in emergencies.

Context and Importance of Reporting

Sexual offenses on public transport remain a significant concern in the UK. According to recent statistics from the British Transport Police, reports of sexual offenses on trains have increased by 15% over the past two years, highlighting the need for vigilance and swift action. The SHPO issued in this case serves as a preventative measure to protect potential victims and deter repeat offenses.
