Oyo State-born filmmaker Kunle Afolayan has signed a landmark partnership agreement with the Government of the Republic of Benin to develop a major film city project and co-produce a cultural television series centered on Orisha/Vodun heritage for a global audience.


The agreement marks a significant cultural and economic collaboration between Nigeria and Benin Republic, focusing on the shared Yoruba and West African spiritual heritage. The planned film city is expected to serve as a production hub for African storytelling, attract international filmmakers, and boost tourism and job creation in the region.
According to details of the partnership, the Orisha/Vodun series will explore the historical, spiritual, and cultural significance of traditional belief systems deeply rooted in West Africa. The project aims to present authentic narratives with high production standards tailored for international streaming platforms and broadcasters.
Industry observers describe the move as a strategic expansion of African cinema’s global footprint, positioning West African mythology and history within mainstream international entertainment.
