Violence Erupts at APC Ward Congress in Ondo State, Resulting in Fatalities and Injuries
Tragedy struck during the All Progressives Congress (APC) ward congress held in Idanre Local Government Area, Ondo State, on Wednesday, February 18, 2026, when violent clashes led to the deaths of two individuals and left three others wounded.
Armed Attack Disrupts Political Gathering
According to eyewitness accounts, a group of armed men, believed to be political thugs, stormed the town, targeting the Commercial Road and Onibata areas amid the ongoing congress. The assailants fired shots into the air, inciting panic among residents and party members who fled to safety.
Targeted Assault on APC Chairman’s Family Member
Sources revealed that Raphael, the younger brother of Ondo State APC Chairman, Engr. Ade Adetimehin, was severely attacked by the gunmen. Mistaken for the chairman himself, Raphael was shot multiple times. When the bullets failed to incapacitate him, the attackers dragged him from his vehicle and inflicted further harm with machetes before abandoning him in a pool of blood and setting his car ablaze.
Immediate Medical Response and Condemnation
Raphael was rushed to a nearby hospital for urgent medical care. Engr. Ade Adetimehin confirmed the assault on his brother and condemned the rising political violence in the state. He emphasized that political competition should never escalate to life-threatening confrontations and urged security agencies to restore peace and order in the community.
Security Forces Intervene to Restore Calm
Following the outbreak of violence, the Ondo State Police Command promptly deployed officers to the affected areas. Commissioner of Police Adebowale Lawal personally led a contingent of security operatives, including the State Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Oluyemi Ibiloye, to assess and manage the situation.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Jimoh Abayomi, confirmed that the attack resulted in two fatalities and three injuries. A distress call was received at approximately 11:05 am from the Divisional Police Officer in Idanre, prompting an immediate tactical response. The police successfully restored order, secured the area, and launched investigations to identify and apprehend those responsible.
