FCT Police Detain Two Individuals Over Fatal Incident in Byazhin
Authorities from the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command have apprehended two men linked to a fatal incident that took place in the Byazhin neighborhood. The case involves a tragic domestic altercation that escalated to deadly consequences.
Details of the Incident
According to a statement released by SP Josephine Adeh, the command’s spokesperson, the Byazhin Divisional Headquarters received an emergency call on the night of February 12 at approximately 11:45 PM. The report indicated that a 16-year-old boy named Chidera Benjamin, residing in Byazhin Across, had inflicted a serious machete wound on his mother during a heated family dispute. Police officers were promptly dispatched to the location upon receiving the alert.
Investigation Findings and Arrests
Preliminary inquiries uncovered that two neighbors, Cosmos Okafor (31 years old) and Okechukwu Wisdom (17 years old), intervened after witnessing the violent confrontation. The conflict reportedly originated from accusations that Chidera had been illicitly transferring money from his mother’s bank account to his personal Opay account without her approval. When confronted, Chidera allegedly reacted violently, attacking his mother with a machete and severely injuring her hand.
In response, the two neighbors confronted Chidera, resulting in a physical altercation during which he sustained critical injuries and lost consciousness. He was immediately transported to Kubwa General Hospital, where medical personnel later confirmed his death. Both Cosmos and Okechukwu were arrested at the scene and are currently in police custody.
Police Commissioner’s Statement and Community Advisory
FCT Police Commissioner CP Miller G. Dantawaye, psc., expressed condolences to the bereaved family and emphasized the importance of resolving conflicts through peaceful and lawful channels. He cautioned residents against taking justice into their own hands, warning that impulsive actions fueled by anger can lead to irreversible tragedies.
Next Steps
The suspects remain detained as investigations continue. Authorities have confirmed that they will face prosecution once the inquiry is complete.
Context and Broader Implications
Incidents of domestic violence and related fatalities have been a growing concern in urban areas of Nigeria. Recent statistics from the Nigerian Police Force indicate a 12% increase in reported domestic violence cases in the FCT over the past year, underscoring the urgent need for community awareness and intervention programs. This case highlights the critical importance of addressing family disputes through mediation and legal frameworks rather than resorting to violence.
