President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Saturday attended the 61st Argungu International Fishing and Cultural Festival in Kebbi State, where a record 59-kilogram fish haul emerged as one of the highlights of the historic event.

The President’s visit followed the commissioning of key projects in the state, including a new state secretariat complex and an upgraded motor park, before proceeding to the iconic fishing festival.
At the Matan Fada River, bare-handed competitors dived into the waters in pursuit of the largest catch, continuing a tradition that has defined the Argungu festival for decades. Mayama Abubakar Usman clinched first place after landing a massive 59kg fish, earning a cash prize of ₦1 million and two Toyota vehicles.
The Argungu Festival, first held in 1934, is widely regarded as a symbol of peace and cultural unity in Nigeria. In his remarks, President Tinubu praised the event’s 83-year legacy as a beacon of national cohesion and cultural pride.
He reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to supporting cultural heritage initiatives, noting that such platforms strengthen unity and boost tourism and local economies.
The annual festival attracts thousands of visitors from within and outside Nigeria, combining competitive fishing with cultural displays, music, dance, and traditional wrestling.
