Labour Party’s Datti Baba-Ahmed Predicts Leadership Challenges for ADC in 2027 Presidential Race

Datti Baba-Ahmed, the Vice Presidential candidate for the Labour Party in Nigeria’s 2023 general elections, has expressed concerns about potential internal conflicts within the African Democratic Congress (ADC) ahead of the 2027 Presidential election. Speaking in a recent interview with Trust TV, Baba-Ahmed highlighted the absence of a unifying figure within ADC who could be universally accepted as the party’s presidential candidate.

Absence of a Unifying Leader in ADC

Baba-Ahmed pointed out that unlike major political parties that have had dominant personalities such as Muhammadu Buhari or Bola Tinubu, ADC currently lacks a comparable figure. He emphasized that this void could lead to disputes if prominent politicians like Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, or Rotimi Amaechi vie for the party’s ticket, as other party members might oppose their candidacy, believing there are more suitable contenders.

“Firstly, ADC does not have a Buhari-like figure. For instance, if Atiku secures the ticket, some members will object; the same applies if Amaechi or Obi is chosen. Secondly, they lack a Tinubu—someone focused, well-resourced, determined, and experienced. Thirdly, there is no Jonathan figure in the mix. Jonathan’s 2011 election came with a promise to Northern leaders that he wouldn’t contest in 2015, which helped ease regional tensions.”

Comparing ADC’s Leadership Dynamics to Past Political Figures

Baba-Ahmed’s analysis draws on the political legacies of Nigeria’s past leaders. Buhari’s stronghold and Tinubu’s strategic acumen have historically unified their parties, while Jonathan’s promise not to seek re-election helped maintain regional balance. ADC’s lack of such defining personalities could complicate consensus-building within the party.

Implications for Nigeria’s Political Landscape

As Nigeria approaches the 2027 elections, the internal dynamics of opposition parties like ADC will be critical. With Nigeria’s electorate becoming increasingly discerning—according to recent polls, over 60% of voters prioritize party unity and clear leadership—parties without a clear front-runner may face challenges in mobilizing support. This scenario underscores the importance of strategic leadership and coalition-building in Nigeria’s evolving democracy.
