Emmanuel Amuneke’s Path to Leading the Super Eagles: Pinnick’s Perspective
Amaju Pinnick, the ex-president of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), recently reaffirmed that Emmanuel Amuneke remains a strong candidate for the head coach position of the Super Eagles, according to Soccernet.ng. However, Pinnick emphasized that Amuneke must demonstrate significant achievements at the club level before being considered for this prestigious role.

The Super Eagles, boasting three Africa Cup of Nations titles, represent one of the continent’s most challenging coaching assignments. Pinnick insists that only demonstrable, recent success in club management can justify an appointment to this role, underscoring the need for proven results rather than relying solely on past reputation.
Amuneke’s Coaching Journey and Achievements
Emmanuel Amuneke is widely recognized as one of Nigeria’s most accomplished former internationals to transition into coaching. His playing career was distinguished, featuring stints with clubs such as Julius Berger, Zamalek, Sporting Lisbon, and Barcelona, where he secured multiple titles. Since embarking on his coaching career in 2008, Amuneke has managed Nigerian clubs like Julius Berger and Ocean Boys before stepping onto the international stage.

His reputation soared in 2015 when he led Nigeria’s under-17 team to victory at the FIFA U-17 World Cup in Chile. This tournament also marked the emergence of Victor Osimhen, with Amuneke credited for nurturing the future Galatasaray striker’s early career. Subsequently, Amuneke took charge of Tanzania’s national team, guiding them to the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualification, and later served as assistant coach for the Super Eagles during the 2022 World Cup qualifying playoff against Ghana.
Current Role and Pinnick’s Expectations
Despite his impressive résumé, Amuneke was overlooked for the Super Eagles head coach role in 2024, with the NFF appointing Finidi George, who recently clinched the NPFL title with Rivers United. Presently, Amuneke is managing Heartland FC, a club competing in Nigeria’s second division following their relegation last season.

Pinnick has outlined stringent criteria for Amuneke’s potential elevation to the Super Eagles’ helm. These include leading Heartland FC back to the Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL), contending for the league championship, and making significant strides in the CAF Champions League-a tournament Nigerian clubs have not won in over two decades.

Pinnick’s Insights on Amuneke’s Prospects
“I have a lot of respect for him, and we share a good rapport,” Pinnick stated during the Sunday Oliseh Global Football Insights Podcast. “However, I believe ex-internationals should focus on strengthening local clubs first.”
“He’s currently with Heartland FC, but I’m not fully aware of their current challenges or successes. From my perspective, he’s a talented coach with great potential.”
“Heartland is a historic club with over 40 years of legacy. If he can elevate them to win the CAF Champions League, it would be a remarkable achievement. He’s still young in coaching terms.”
“Achieving such milestones would naturally pave the way for him to take charge of the Super Eagles. But it’s important to understand that coaching Nigeria’s national team demands more than just a good reputation-it requires proven results.”
“Let’s watch how he performs with Heartland FC before making any decisions.”
Currently, the Super Eagles are under the leadership of Eric Chelle, who recently steered the team to a commendable third-place finish at the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations held in Morocco.
