Two Nigerians Detained in Pune Following Fatal Altercation

Authorities in Pune, India, have taken into custody two Nigerian men in connection with the homicide of a fellow Nigerian national. The victim, identified as 40-year-old Emeka Christian, was fatally assaulted in the early hours of Monday, January 12, 2026, at an apartment complex in the Pisoli neighborhood.

Incident Overview: Dispute Over Romantic Rivalry

The fatal confrontation reportedly stemmed from a disagreement involving a Nigerian woman residing in the same building. According to police reports, Emeka was leaving the apartment when the suspects followed him to the parking area and violently attacked him, resulting in his death.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Rajkumar Shinde confirmed that the motive behind the killing was linked to a love triangle, highlighting the personal nature of the conflict.

Details of the Investigation and Arrests

Following the incident, a First Information Report (FIR) was filed at the Kalepadal police station, naming three Nigerian nationals as suspects. So far, two individuals-Jhonpol Obinna Moneke, aged 40, and Nyanemeko Maduabuchi Oniya, aged 43-have been apprehended, while efforts continue to locate the third suspect.

Senior Police Inspector Mansing Patil elaborated on the case, stating that preliminary investigations revealed one of the accused had a romantic interest in the Nigerian woman, frequently visiting her residence. It is believed that Emeka had asked the woman to distance herself from this individual, which escalated tensions and culminated in the violent attack around 3 a.m.

Community Response and Medical Efforts

Gift Utah, Vice President of the Nigerian Students Union in Pune, promptly responded to the scene and facilitated Emeka’s transfer to Ruby Hall Clinic in Wanavdi. Despite medical intervention, Emeka succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment.

Legal Proceedings and Charges

The police have charged the suspects under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including Section 103 for murder and Section 3(5) for related offenses. Investigators believe the victim was struck with a blunt instrument during the assault, which led to his demise.
