Demand for N70 Million Ransom Following Kidnapping in Edo State

Eight individuals were abducted from a hotel in Ibillo, located within the Akoko-Edo Local Government Area of Edo State, with kidnappers initially demanding a ransom of N100 million for their release. The Okpahi of Imoga Kingdom, Oba Patrick Obajoye, revealed this information during an interview with Punch on Monday, January 12, 2025.

Incident Details: How the Abduction Occurred

The victims had traveled to Ibillo to attend a social event and chose to stay overnight at Star Boy Hotel, a property owned by a native of Imoga. According to Oba Obajoye, the kidnappers arrived at the hotel disguised in military uniforms, carrying drinks, and pretended to be waiting for someone, which allowed them to gain access without raising suspicion.

After some time, the kidnappers confronted the hotel owner, Lucky Obaloju, confiscating his two mobile phones along with those of the other guests. The victims were then bound and forcibly taken on foot into a nearby forested area.

Negotiations and Ransom Reduction

Initially, the kidnappers demanded a hefty ransom of N100 million. However, following negotiations, they lowered the amount to N70 million. When further appeals were made to reduce the ransom, the kidnappers insisted that one of the hotel owner’s vehicles be sold to cover the payment.

Among the abducted are seven men and one woman, all currently held captive in an undisclosed location. The manner in which the kidnappers communicated during ransom talks suggests possible insider involvement, raising concerns about security breaches within the community.

Community Impact and Response

Oba Obajoye expressed deep sorrow over the incident, emphasizing the emotional toll on the community. “It is heartbreaking to see young individuals with promising futures taken hostage in a place they considered safe after attending a function,” he lamented.

The monarch also praised the Edo State Police Command and the state government for their ongoing efforts to locate and rescue the victims. Despite deploying advanced technology and resources, the security agencies have yet to successfully track down the kidnappers. The community remains hopeful that continued operations will lead to the safe return of the abductees.

Additional Information: Injuries and Medical Care

Reports indicate that one of the victims sustained a gunshot wound while attempting to escape the kidnappers. The injured individual is currently receiving medical treatment at a confidential healthcare facility.

Contextualizing the Kidnapping Crisis in Nigeria

Kidnapping for ransom has become an alarming trend across various regions in Nigeria, with the National Bureau of Statistics reporting a 15% increase in abduction cases in 2024 compared to the previous year. Incidents like the one in Edo State highlight the urgent need for enhanced security measures and community vigilance to protect citizens and curb criminal activities.
