Kano NSCDC Suspends Fagge Divisional Officer Following Custodial Death Investigation

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Kano State has taken decisive action by suspending the Fagge Divisional Officer after a detainee died under questionable conditions while in custody.

Incident Overview and Ongoing Inquiry

Ibrahim Abdullahi, the Public Relations Officer for the Kano NSCDC Command, confirmed that the divisional officer and all personnel present during the incident have been transferred to the Kano State Police Command. This handover is intended to facilitate an impartial and comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the detainee’s death.

Mohammed Hassan Agalama, the NSCDC Kano State Commandant, authorized the removal of SC Amina Musa Kolawale from her post as the Fagge Divisional Officer. She has been succeeded by CSC Bashir Isa Abubakar, who has been assigned to oversee the division’s operations moving forward.

Upholding Human Rights and Institutional Integrity

The NSCDC issued a public appeal urging citizens to remain calm and patient as the investigation proceeds. The Corps reiterated its unwavering commitment to protecting human rights, safeguarding the dignity of life, and strictly following established professional protocols and legal frameworks.

Allegations Linked to the Deceased Officer

Social media reports from user Jafar Magaji revealed that the deceased, Halifa Abdullahi, was himself an NSCDC officer stationed at the Fagge division. Halifa was accused by his superiors of misappropriating ₦1,000,000 and a motorcycle. Following these accusations, he was allegedly subjected to harsh physical punishment, which is suspected to have led to his demise.

According to Halifa’s brother, on the night of January 6, 2026, when he visited with food, he overheard officers discussing plans to withhold nourishment from Halifa and heard sounds indicative of violent assault. This testimony has intensified demands for a transparent and thorough investigation.

Wider Implications and Calls for Reform

Cases of detainee abuse have sparked nationwide concern, prompting security agencies to reassess their detention and custodial procedures. The National Human Rights Commission reports a 15% rise in complaints related to custodial mistreatment over the past year, underscoring the urgent need for systemic reforms.

The prompt response by the NSCDC in this matter highlights an increasing focus on accountability within Nigeria’s security forces, aiming to rebuild public confidence and prevent recurrence of such tragic incidents.
