The Jersey has announced plans to repatriate $9.5 million (£7 million) to Nigeria, funds linked to the late former military ruler Sani Abacha, as part of ongoing international efforts to recover stolen public assets.

According to officials, the recovered funds are expected to be deployed toward public infrastructure projects in Nigeria, in line with existing frameworks governing the use of repatriated assets. Previous Abacha-linked recoveries have been earmarked for large-scale, high-impact infrastructure initiatives, with monitoring mechanisms put in place to ensure transparency and accountability.

The latest tranche adds to billions of dollars traced, seized, and returned over the years from jurisdictions across Europe and beyond, underscoring continued cooperation between Nigeria and international partners in asset recovery cases.

Nigerian authorities have welcomed the development, reiterating commitments that the funds will be applied to projects designed to deliver broad public benefit.

OYOGist notes that the return of the $9.5 million further reinforces global resolve against illicit financial flows and the laundering of stolen state assets.
