The Oyo State Government has approved an upward review of its monthly gratuity payments from ₦1 billion to ₦3 billion, in a move aimed at improving the welfare of retirees and accelerating the clearance of outstanding pension arrears in the state.

The development was disclosed by the Commissioner for Establishments and Training, Prof. Salihu Adelabu, who announced the increment during a briefing in his office on Tuesday. He revealed that 4,612 retirees have benefitted from gratuity payments since the beginning of the administration of Governor Seyi Makinde.

According to the Commissioner, the latest decision represents a 200% increase in the monthly gratuity allocation, rising from ₦1 billion to ₦3 billion, effective from January 2026.

Prof. Adelabu commended Governor Makinde for what he described as visionary and people-oriented leadership, noting that the policy demonstrates the administration’s firm commitment to the dignity and welfare of senior citizens who served the state.

He assured that the state government is committed to clearing all outstanding gratuity backlogs by May 2027, the end of the Governor’s current tenure, adding that no civil servant or retiree would be left unattended to.

The Commissioner further stated that the intervention reinforces the government’s resolve to maintain a transparent, efficient and accountable pension and gratuity payment system, while restoring public confidence in social welfare programmes for retirees.

In his New Year goodwill message, Prof. Adelabu urged residents, civil servants and retirees across the state to embrace hope, unity and progress under what he described as the purposeful leadership of Governor Makinde, wishing them a peaceful and prosperous 2026.
