Wike Advises Traditional Ruler to Maintain Political Neutrality

During a recent visit to the palace of the Okochiri Kingdom’s traditional ruler, Minister Nyesom Wike emphasized the importance of the Amanyanabo remaining politically neutral. While acknowledging that the traditional leader may have personal preferences regarding the upcoming gubernatorial election, Wike urged him to avoid direct involvement in political contests.

Context of Political Tensions in Rivers State

This counsel comes amid ongoing political tensions between Wike and the current Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara. Since stepping down as governor in 2023, Wike has faced calls from various political factions to distance himself from the state’s political scene. The friction intensified following a six-month suspension imposed on Governor Fubara after President Bola Tinubu declared a state of emergency in Rivers State.

Governor Fubara’s Strategic Political Moves

In a notable political maneuver, Governor Fubara recently aligned himself with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), openly endorsing President Tinubu’s administration and his 2027 re-election campaign. Despite this, Wike remains skeptical about the effectiveness of such moves in securing Fubara’s political future.

Wike’s Perspective on the Upcoming Political Landscape

Addressing the Amanyanabo, Wike remarked, “The political season is approaching rapidly. I am not advising you to participate; rather, I urge you to remain a traditional leader and allow us to conduct our political affairs independently. While you may have your preferred candidates, it is crucial that you do not publicly involve yourself.”

He further added, “Should any issues arise, feel free to reach out to us for resolution. However, the political environment will no longer be business as usual. Decisions have been made, and those close to you are aware of the direction we are taking. This is confidential and not an invitation for your direct involvement.”

Respecting Traditional Authority Amid Political Rivalries

Wike also reflected on his previous reluctance to visit the Amanyanabo’s palace, explaining that his absence was out of respect for the traditional institution and to avoid any perception of undermining the ruler’s authority. “You are a friend, but I have refrained from visiting to prevent any misunderstanding regarding your position. I trust you understand my intentions,” he said.

Looking Ahead: The Role of Traditional Leaders in Politics

As Rivers State approaches a critical electoral period, the role of traditional rulers like the Amanyanabo remains a delicate balance between cultural leadership and political influence. Current political analysts note that while traditional leaders often hold sway over local communities, their overt participation in partisan politics can complicate governance and social cohesion.

Recent studies indicate that in Nigeria, over 70% of traditional rulers prefer to maintain a neutral stance during elections to preserve their legitimacy and community trust. This trend aligns with Wike’s advice, underscoring the importance of traditional institutions focusing on cultural stewardship rather than political partisanship.
