Victor Osimhen Highlights Raphael Onyedika as Nigeria’s Most Overlooked Star at AFCON 2025

In a recent statement to Soccernet.ng, Nigeria’s leading striker Victor Osimhen singled out midfielder Raphael Onyedika as the Super Eagles’ most underrated player during the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

Despite the spotlight often shining on forwards and goal scorers, Osimhen emphasized Onyedika’s vital role in Nigeria’s campaign, praising his consistent and impactful performances that have largely flown under the radar.

Onyedika’s Crucial Role in Nigeria’s Round of 16 Qualification

Nigeria secured their place in the knockout stages with a convincing 3-1 triumph over Uganda at the Fes Stadium. Onyedika was instrumental in this victory, netting two second-half goals that decisively swung the match in Nigeria’s favor.

Earlier, Paul Onuachu had put Nigeria ahead before halftime, but it was Onyedika’s clinical finishing, assisted by Samuel Chukwueze’s precise passes, that sealed the win and demonstrated his growing influence on the team.

“Onyedika has consistently been one of our standout performers, yet he rarely receives the recognition he merits,” Osimhen told Soccernet.ng from Morocco.

“His talent is undeniable, and after his display against Uganda, it’s clear he deserves more attention and praise.”

“This isn’t about me or the team; it’s about giving credit where it’s due to a player who has truly excelled.”

Osimhen’s First Captaincy Experience and Nigeria’s Collective Ambition

Victor Osimhen also shared his thoughts on captaining the Super Eagles for the first time, stepping in for Wilfred Ndidi, who was rested ahead of the tournament’s knockout rounds.

Having been one of the few players retained in the starting lineup, Osimhen described the honor of leading the national team as a significant milestone in his career.

“It’s a great feeling to lead the team,” Osimhen remarked to reporters in the mixed zone.

“I’ve gained enough experience to guide the squad, and it’s encouraging that both the coach and my teammates trust me in this role.”

He further explained how the captaincy enhanced his communication with teammates and officials, allowing him to better support the team on the field.

“Wearing the armband gives me a sense of responsibility. It helps me communicate with the referee and look out for my teammates, especially when they’re injured,” Osimhen added.

“Leading the team to victory and into the Round of 16 made the experience even more rewarding.”

Facing the Knockout Stage with Confidence

Looking ahead, the 27-year-old striker expressed Nigeria’s readiness to confront any opponent without fear.

“We’re prepared for whoever comes next. No team intimidates us,” Osimhen stated firmly.

Chasing Records with Team Goals in Mind

Although Osimhen is closing in on Rashidi Yekini’s all-time Nigerian scoring record, he insists that personal achievements are secondary to team success.

“I don’t dwell on breaking records. My focus is on helping the team with goals and assists,” he said.

“Whether it happens at this AFCON or later, I’m confident I’ll reach that milestone eventually.”

With Nigeria now advancing confidently into the Round of 16, Osimhen emphasized the squad’s united goal of securing a fourth Africa Cup of Nations title.

“The team is fully committed to making this dream a reality. The competition will get tougher, but we’re ready to give our all,” he affirmed.

“I can’t promise trophies, but I guarantee hard work and determination from myself and the entire squad.”

Depth in Attack Bolsters Nigeria’s Chances

Osimhen also highlighted the attacking options available to Nigeria, mentioning teammates like Paul Onuachu, Akor, and Ade, who are capable of delivering goals and assists.

“It’s not just me; we have quality players who can step up and make a difference. When my chance comes, I intend to make the most of it,” he concluded.

Currently, Osimhen’s international goal tally stands at 32, just five shy of equaling the legendary Rashidi Yekini’s record, underscoring his growing legacy in Nigerian football.
