Ethiopian Airlines has achieved a historic aviation milestone, becoming the first African airline to surpass two million departing passenger seats in a single month. According to data published by Business Insider Africa, citing global aviation analytics firm OAG, the airline recorded 2,004,642 scheduled departing seats for December 2025 — the highest monthly seat capacity ever recorded by an African carrier.
The milestone reflects the airline’s rapid post-pandemic expansion, increased fleet capacity, and growing international route network, solidifying its position as the continent’s leading aviation hub carrier. Analysts say the achievement also underscores Ethiopia’s strategic investment in aviation infrastructure and airline partnerships across Africa, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East.
Ethiopian Airlines has continued to outperform regional competitors in terms of passenger volumes, operational growth, and network connectivity, while maintaining its role as a key driver of African air transport development.
Industry observers describe the December capacity milestone as both symbolic and operationally significant, signalling increased confidence in African air travel demand and the airline’s long-term expansion strategy.
