Our Journey Together

By the Bride, Simi

Our love story unfolded in the most unexpected way. In December 2021, during my inaugural Detty December experience in Lagos, I was unaware that my life was on the cusp of a profound transformation. At the time, I was in my final year of medical school, visiting Nigeria to spend the holidays with my family. One evening, my friend Mayowa dropped by with two friends, including someone I hadn’t met before-Tomiwa. He was reserved and quiet. I greeted everyone, exchanged a brief hello with him, and that was the extent of our interaction that night. Two days later, Mayowa informed me that Tomiwa had asked for my contact details. Although I wasn’t seeking a relationship, something inside me urged, “Why not?” From our very first conversation, everything felt remarkably natural and effortless.

We quickly discovered how much we had in common. Our birthdays are just a day apart in the same year, and intriguingly, Tomiwa’s birthday coincides with my father’s. Our first date extended into hours filled with laughter, deep conversations, and a connection that felt like we had known each other for years. However, time was limited-I had only three days left in Lagos before heading to Ghana for New Year’s celebrations and then back to the US for my residency interviews. Fate intervened when I contracted COVID-19, forcing me into a five-day quarantine and causing me to miss my Ghana trip. Due to the tight schedule of my interviews, I extended my stay in Lagos by three weeks.

Despite the time difference and my demanding interview schedule, Tomiwa was a constant source of support-bringing meals, offering encouragement, and ensuring I never felt isolated. What initially seemed like an inconvenient delay turned into one of the most cherished chapters of my life. That extended month solidified our bond beyond doubt. After returning to the US, we maintained daily communication. Three months later, during a trip to Kenya, Tomiwa surprised me by flying out to meet me, and it was there he asked me to be his girlfriend. A year later, he relocated to the US to be closer to me. Along the way, we uncovered a remarkable family connection: my father’s best friend is married to Tomiwa’s aunt. Our families had been intertwined long before we met, unbeknownst to us. Two years after that fateful December, we got engaged. What began as a quiet greeting during Detty December has blossomed into the love story of a lifetime-one I almost missed.
