Federal Government Announces Official Holidays for Christmas and New Year 2025-2026

The Federal Government has officially designated Thursday, December 25, and Friday, December 26, 2025, as public holidays in observance of Christmas Day and Boxing Day. Additionally, Thursday, January 1, 2026, has been declared a public holiday to celebrate the New Year.

Official Communication from the Ministry of Interior

This declaration was made public by the Ministry of Interior through its Permanent Secretary, Dr. Magdalene Ajayi, acting on behalf of the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo. The announcement underscores the government’s commitment to recognizing significant cultural and religious festivities nationwide.

Seasonal Reflections and National Unity

In his message, the Minister extended heartfelt holiday greetings to Christians within Nigeria and across the globe, as well as to all Nigerians. He emphasized that the Christmas season is a time for introspection on core values such as love, peace, humility, and sacrifice. These principles, he noted, are essential for fostering unity, tolerance, and harmony among Nigeria’s diverse communities.

Call for Inclusivity and National Progress

Beyond religious boundaries, the Minister encouraged all Nigerians-regardless of faith or ethnicity-to embrace this festive period as an opportunity to pray for peace, security, and the country’s advancement. He highlighted the importance of collective support for initiatives aimed at national development and social cohesion.

Promoting Safety and Responsibility During Festivities

Recognizing the surge in travel and public events during the holiday season, the Minister urged citizens to exercise moderation and responsibility. He called on everyone to remain law-abiding, vigilant, and cooperative with security agencies to ensure a safe and peaceful holiday period. This collaboration is vital in mitigating risks associated with increased public activities.

Strengthening Community Bonds and National Commitment

The festive season, according to the Minister, presents a valuable chance for Nigerians to deepen interpersonal connections, demonstrate empathy, and renew their dedication to nation-building efforts. Such collective spirit is crucial for sustaining the country’s progress and unity.

Warm Wishes for the Festive Season

Concluding his statement, the Minister wished all Nigerians a joyful Christmas and a successful New Year, expressing hope that the holidays bring happiness and prosperity to every household.
