Yobe State Police Crack Down on Rising Gender-Based Violence Cases
Recent Arrests Highlight Alarming Trend in Child Abuse
The Yobe State Police Command has apprehended two individuals accused of sexually abusing minors within Jakusko and Fika Local Government Areas. According to the police public relations officer, SP Dungus Abdulkarim, investigations revealed that one suspect, 20-year-old Rabilu Sani from Jadam Village, Jakusko, is HIV positive.
Sani reportedly enticed a 4-year-old girl into a private room where he committed the assault. Medical examinations confirmed the child sustained serious injuries. The case has been handed over to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for a comprehensive and confidential inquiry before prosecution.
Additional Incidents and Ongoing Investigations
In a separate case, Yusuf Garba, a 23-year-old grinding machine operator from Dumbulwa Village, was detained after allegedly luring a 5-year-old girl into his workshop and sexually assaulting her. The victim received immediate medical attention, and Garba remains in custody pending legal proceedings.
Furthermore, two men, Audu Ado (22) and Babangida Alhaji Dawaye, both residents of Galadimawa Village, were arrested for gang-raping a 16-year-old girl returning from a Maulud celebration in Babban Gida. The suspects admitted to threatening the victim with weapons. The teenager is currently under medical care, while the suspects are under investigation at SCID.
Escalating Gender-Based Violence: Statistical Overview
Since September 2025, the Yobe State Police have documented 25 rape cases, predominantly involving children under nine years old. To date, 28 suspects have been arrested, with 10 cases already in court and others undergoing investigation. This surge in gender-based violence (GBV) and child abuse has raised significant alarm within the community and law enforcement agencies alike.
Police Response and Community Call to Action
Commissioner of Police, CP Emmanuel Ado, psc, fdc, has vehemently condemned these egregious offenses. He has mandated all officers to approach GBV and sexual assault cases with the highest degree of professionalism, empathy, and urgency. The Commissioner emphasized that perpetrators will face stringent legal consequences without exception.
The police command urges parents, guardians, religious leaders, and civil society organizations to remain vigilant and collaborate closely with law enforcement to safeguard children from predators within their communities.
