Chidozie Awaziem Sets Sights on AFCON Triumph Amidst World Cup Disappointment

Chidozie Awaziem, a key defender for Nigeria’s Super Eagles, has openly declared his ambition to secure the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title for his country, according to reports from Soccernet.ng.

The upcoming AFCON tournament is scheduled to commence on December 21, 2025, in Morocco, where Nigeria aims to clinch their fourth continental crown.

Pressure Mounts on Super Eagles Following World Cup Qualification Failure

After missing out on the 2026 FIFA World Cup, even after a second chance through the playoffs, the Super Eagles are under immense scrutiny. Head coach Eric Chelle and his squad are acutely aware that their performance at AFCON will be pivotal in restoring national pride.

Squad Announcement and Awaziem’s Role

The Nigerian Football Federation recently unveiled a preliminary 55-man roster for AFCON, blending seasoned veterans with emerging talents. Awaziem, who has earned 35 international caps since his debut in 2017, remains a staple in the squad.

At 28 years old, soon to turn 29 in January, Awaziem is expected to be a mainstay in the final team heading to Morocco, especially given his consistent performances at club level. This season, he has been ever-present for Nantes, featuring in all 14 matches available to him.

“My primary goal is to win the AFCON with Nigeria. Dwelling on the World Cup qualification failure doesn’t help. We owe it to our country and supporters to rectify that setback,” Awaziem expressed in a recent interview on Nantes’ official website.

Historical Context and Current Challenges

Nigeria last lifted the AFCON trophy in 2013 under the guidance of coach Stephen Keshi, a triumph that remains a benchmark for the team. Despite having players active in top European leagues, the Super Eagles have struggled to consistently deliver, often underperforming against less formidable opponents.

In the 2023 AFCON, Nigeria finished as runners-up, but recent performances suggest a dip in form and confidence.

AFCON 2025: Competitors and Expectations

Morocco, the host nation, is widely regarded as the frontrunner in the upcoming tournament, according to recent power rankings. Other strong contenders include DR Congo, Ivory Coast, and Cameroon, all boasting talented squads.

Despite skepticism surrounding Nigeria’s chances, Awaziem and his teammates remain hopeful that they can defy expectations and bring the coveted trophy home.
