Introducing Rev. Sr. Dr. Carine Okeh: A Trailblazer in Educational Leadership
My name is Rev. Sr. Dr. Carine Okeh, proudly among the 487 recipients of the Doctor of Philosophy degree at the University of Ibadan’s 2025 Convocation Ceremony. I come from Ihitte/Uboma Local Government Area in Imo State.
What Motivated a Reverend Sister to Pursue a Doctorate?
Education serves as the cornerstone for societal progress. My drive to enhance decision-making within the education sector inspired me to advance my academic journey to the highest level. As both a Reverend Sister and a PhD graduate, I am confident that my commitment to serving humanity and fostering personal development will be strengthened, enabling me to excel as an innovator, problem-solver, and policy influencer.
Why Focus on Education Instead of Theology?
While my religious vocation has deeply shaped my life, I have long recognized the importance of balancing spiritual duties with practical knowledge. My academic pursuits-from undergraduate studies to doctoral research-have equipped me to improve educational frameworks, particularly within Catholic Secondary Schools throughout Nigeria. This focus allows me to contribute meaningfully to the educational sector while honoring my religious commitments.
Tracing the Academic Path: From Undergraduate to PhD
My academic journey began in 2012 when I was admitted to the Department of Educational Management at the University of Ibadan. I graduated in 2016 with First Class Honours in Educational Management and Political Science, earning the distinction of best graduating student in my department. The university awarded me a scholarship for my Master’s degree, which I completed in 2019 with a PhD-grade performance in Educational Systems Administration. During this period, I also served as a Teaching Assistant, gaining invaluable teaching experience.
In 2020, I embarked on my doctoral studies, specializing further in Educational Systems Administration. My research, titled “Leadership Styles and Managerial Skills of Catholic Female Religious and Their Impact on Administrative Effectiveness in Catholic Secondary Schools in South-West Nigeria,” involved extensive fieldwork across the region. This study provided deep insights into the operational dynamics of these schools. I am profoundly grateful to my supervisor, Prof. Benedict Emunemu, and the faculty members for their unwavering support throughout my doctoral program.
On November 17, 2025, I was honored to receive my PhD in Educational Management during the University of Ibadan’s 77th Foundation Day and Convocation Ceremony.
Overcoming Obstacles: Balancing Multiple Roles
The journey was not without its challenges. The most significant hurdle was managing the delicate balance between academic responsibilities, work commitments, personal relationships, and self-care.
Strategies for Success Amidst Challenges
To navigate these difficulties, I set clear objectives and pursued them with unwavering determination, resilience, and dedication, complemented by prayer. Building a strong support system comprising colleagues, mentors, and family members was instrumental in sustaining my progress throughout graduate school.
Vision for the Future: Applying Knowledge to Transform Education
My aspirations are multifaceted. I aim to excel as an educator and researcher, addressing complex challenges within the educational landscape, especially those affecting Catholic Secondary Schools nationwide. Additionally, I intend to influence policy development to enhance school administration and ultimately dedicate myself to serving humanity.
Leveraging the expertise I have gained, I plan to contribute actively to the education sector by tackling pressing issues, mentoring students, and continuously updating my skills to remain effective in an evolving academic environment.
Words of Encouragement for Aspiring Sisters
To those considering a similar path, my heartfelt advice is to maintain a strong spiritual foundation through prayer and trust in God. Set clear goals, stay focused, and use your knowledge and skills to serve your community with dedication and compassion.
