Oyo APC Condemns PDP’s National Convention as a Display of Lawlessness
The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State has strongly criticized the recent National Convention of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) held in Ibadan, describing the event as a disgraceful spectacle marked by disorder and blatant disregard for the law. The APC labeled the gathering a “sham” and a “carnival of impunity,” highlighting the controversy surrounding the convention’s legitimacy.
Defying Court Orders Amidst Political Turmoil
Despite multiple judicial rulings that mandated the suspension of the convention, the faction aligned with Governor Engr. Seyi Makinde proceeded with the event. Delegates, reportedly representing all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, convened in Ibadan to elect new national executive committee members for the PDP. This defiance of court directives has intensified political tensions within the state and the party.
Allegations of Coercion and Misuse of Public Resources
In a statement released by APC’s Publicity Secretary, Olawale Sadare, the party accused Governor Makinde of orchestrating a forced shutdown of commercial transport services in Ibadan. This move allegedly aimed to artificially inflate attendance at the convention venue by compelling drivers to gather there, thereby creating a misleading impression of widespread support. The APC condemned this tactic as an abuse of power that disrupted daily life for residents.
Ignoring Local Grievances Amid Political Ambitions
The APC further criticized Governor Makinde for neglecting pressing local issues, particularly the grievances of citizens affected by the demolition of properties along the proposed Ibadan Circular Road corridor. Instead of addressing these concerns, the governor reportedly exacerbated the hardships by restricting commercial vehicles, motorcycles, and tricycles from operating during the convention. This strategy was seen as an attempt to project an image of success for the PDP event at the expense of ordinary residents.
Financial Implications and Party Future
Sources indicate that a significant portion of the September allocations intended for the 33 local government councils in Oyo State was diverted to finance the convention. This financial strain was reportedly due to a lack of contributions from other PDP members nationwide. The APC warned that all public funds expended on the convention would be scrutinized and accounted for in due course.
Forecasting the Decline of PDP in Oyo State
The APC predicted that the controversial convention marks the beginning of the PDP’s decline in Oyo State. They accused Governor Makinde and his allies of hastening the party’s demise through internal conflicts and poor leadership. However, the APC also suggested that reconciliation among PDP factions could restore some relevance ahead of the 2031 general elections, noting that the party has effectively lost ground for the 2027 polls.
