Eric Chelle’s Bold Leadership Revives Nigeria’s World Cup Hopes
Mutiu Adepoju, former Super Eagles midfielder, has commended Eric Chelle for his fearless decision to helm the Nigerian national team amid a turbulent period, according to Soccernet.ng.
Nigeria’s journey in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers began on a shaky note, with the Super Eagles failing to secure a win in their opening four matches. Garnering only three points from twelve, the team’s prospects looked bleak, with morale low and tactical coherence lacking. The coaching position had become unstable, with frequent changes unsettling the squad.

Following AFCON 2023, José Peseiro stepped down, and his successor Finidi George resigned shortly after taking charge. Both coaches oversaw the team’s early struggles in the qualifiers, deepening doubts about Nigeria’s chances of progressing.
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) nearly appointed German coach Bruno Labbadia, but negotiations fell through at the last minute. During this period, the national team appeared to be on the verge of a disappointing campaign.

Taking on a Daunting Challenge: Chelle’s Unconventional Appointment
Amidst this uncertainty, Eric Chelle emerged as the first non-Nigerian African to lead the Super Eagles. His January appointment was seen by many as a daring and unconventional move, yet it has yielded remarkable results.
Under Chelle’s stewardship, Nigeria has transformed into one of the most formidable teams in the qualifiers, remaining unbeaten with five victories and two draws, securing a spot in the final round of World Cup playoffs.

Chelle’s strategic acumen, composed leadership, and ability to rebuild player confidence have been widely praised. After Nigeria’s commanding 4-1 triumph over Gabon, Mutiu Adepoju highlighted the coach’s bravery and positive influence.
“Chelle has done an outstanding job. Given the circumstances when he took over, most coaches would have declined the role,” Adepoju remarked to The Punch.
“He accepted the challenge, brought clarity, and the team’s performances have improved significantly. He deserves all the recognition and praise for his efforts.”

With just one match remaining against DR Congo, Nigeria is on the cusp of reaching the intercontinental playoffs. A win in Sunday’s fixture would keep their ambitions alive for a place at the 2026 World Cup hosted across the USA, Canada, and Mexico.

Referee Lineup Confirmed for Nigeria vs DR Congo Clash
Moroccan official Jalal Jayed has been appointed to referee the crucial encounter. Jayed is no stranger to Nigerian supporters, having officiated the Super Eagles’ 2-0 victory over Rwanda in March, where Victor Osimhen netted a brace.
He will be supported by fellow Moroccans Mustapha Akarkad and Zakaria Bernissi as assistant referees. Tunisia’s Mahrez El Malki will act as the fourth official, while VAR responsibilities are assigned to Algeria’s Lahlou Benbraham and Tunisia’s Haitham Guirat.
