Major Shakeup at PDP National Convention: Key Figures Expelled Amid Allegations

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) recently witnessed a significant upheaval during its National Convention, where several prominent members were expelled. Among those ousted were the Federal Capital Territory Minister and ex-Governor of Rivers State, Barrister Nyesom Wike; former Ekiti State Governor, Mr. Ayodele Fayose; and the controversial ex-National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu.

Additional Expulsions and Party Leadership Changes

Other notable figures expelled include the former National Legal Adviser, Mr. Kamaldeen Adeyemi Ajibade, SAN; Senator Mao Ohuabunwa; George Turner; and Honorable Umar Bature. The motion to expel these individuals was spearheaded by Chief Olabode George, the former Deputy Chairman (South) of the PDP, who cited their involvement in activities detrimental to the party’s unity and progress.

Decisions on Convention Format and State Executive Committees

Earlier in the convention, Senator Ben Obi, serving as Secretary of the National Convention Organising Committee, proposed a motion to transition the gathering into an Elective Convention. This motion, seconded by Mr. Emmanuel Enoidem, SAN, was put to a vote among delegates. Additionally, Governor Seyi Makinde introduced a motion to ratify and confirm the Executive Committees and party structures across various states. These committees were established through congresses compliant with the PDP constitution and supervised by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) alongside security agencies. However, this ratification excluded the states of Imo, Abia, Enugu, and Rivers, reflecting ongoing challenges in those regions. The motion received support from Mr. Daniel Obiechina Okechukwu.

Structural Reforms and Amendments to the Party Constitution

The convention also resolved to dissolve the current National Working Committee (NWC), signaling a fresh start for the party’s leadership framework. Alongside this, delegates approved amendments to certain sections of the PDP constitution, aiming to strengthen governance and internal democracy within the party. These reforms come at a critical time as the PDP seeks to consolidate its position ahead of upcoming electoral contests.

Context and Implications

This decisive action by the PDP reflects ongoing efforts to address internal dissent and reinforce party discipline. With Nigeria’s 2027 general elections approaching, the party’s leadership is under pressure to present a united front. The expulsion of high-profile members accused of undermining party cohesion underscores the challenges political parties face in balancing diverse interests while maintaining organizational integrity..
