NDLEA Chairman Vows Intensified Crackdown on Drug Traffickers Following Reappointment

Retired Brigadier General Buba Marwa, the Chairman of Nigeria’s National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), has issued a stern warning to drug traffickers, cartel leaders, and all involved in narcotics trade. With his recent reappointment for a second five-year term by President Bola Tinubu, Marwa promises a more aggressive and uncompromising approach to dismantling illegal drug operations across the country.

Renewed Mandate to Combat Drug Trafficking

Marwa’s announcement came during a warm reception by NDLEA staff at the agency’s National Headquarters in Abuja, where he expressed deep appreciation for the recognition of the agency’s efforts by the presidency. “Returning from Friday prayers to such a heartfelt welcome was unexpected and humbling,” Marwa remarked. “We thank Almighty God and the President for entrusting us with this renewed responsibility to continue the fight against drug abuse and trafficking.”

President Tinubu’s decision to extend Marwa’s leadership underscores the administration’s commitment to intensifying the battle against narcotics, a challenge that remains critical to Nigeria’s security and public health.

Unyielding Stance Against Drug Cartels

In a resolute message to drug syndicates, Marwa declared, “The challenges ahead will be formidable for those entrenched in the illicit drug trade. This tenure will mark a relentless crackdown-no drugs will cross our borders or circulate within Nigeria unchecked.”

He reaffirmed the NDLEA’s dedication to executing President Tinubu’s directives with strict adherence to the agency’s legal framework, emphasizing that enforcement will be uncompromising and comprehensive.

Encouraging Alternative Livelihoods for Cannabis Farmers

Recognizing the socio-economic factors that drive involvement in illegal drug cultivation, Marwa highlighted the agency’s Alternative Development Unit, which supports farmers willing to transition from cannabis to lawful agricultural activities. “We urge those engaged in illicit cultivation to embrace legitimate means of livelihood,” he said.

However, Marwa issued a clear ultimatum to those who resist reform: “NDLEA is fully prepared to apprehend offenders, seize their narcotics, and confiscate their assets. Upon release from incarceration, they will find nothing left.”

Expanding Rehabilitation and Prevention Efforts

Beyond enforcement, the NDLEA is intensifying its focus on reducing drug demand through comprehensive prevention, awareness campaigns, counseling, treatment, and rehabilitation services. Currently, the agency operates 30 rehabilitation centers nationwide, with plans to establish seven additional centers in 2025. This expansion aims to ensure every Nigerian state has access to rehabilitation facilities, complemented by zonal centers to enhance outreach and effectiveness.

These initiatives align with global best practices, recognizing that combating drug abuse requires a balanced approach combining law enforcement with public health strategies.
