Tim Davie’s Resignation: A Reflection on Leadership and Legacy

PA Media
Dear colleagues,
After twenty years of devoted service to the BBC, I have decided to resign from my position as Director-General. This decision follows extensive reflection, and I am profoundly thankful for the unwavering support from the Chair and Board, particularly during recent turbulent times.
I am actively working with the Board to facilitate a smooth transition to my successor over the coming months.
Guiding the BBC through these challenging and politically charged periods has been both a demanding and deeply personal journey. It is important to me that my successor has sufficient time to influence the forthcoming Royal Charter renewal process.
In a society increasingly marked by division, the BBC stands as a beacon of the UK’s finest values-kindness, tolerance, and curiosity. While no public institution is without fault, our commitment to transparency and accountability must remain unwavering. The recent scrutiny of BBC News has influenced my decision, though it is not the sole factor. Despite some errors, the BBC continues to thrive, and I accept full responsibility as Director-General.
The BBC’s role in nurturing a healthy society and supporting a dynamic creative sector is invaluable. It deserves celebration, not politicization.
In a fiercely competitive media landscape, I am proud that the BBC remains the world’s most trusted news organization. Our programming reaches nearly every UK household and hundreds of millions globally. Our journalism sets a global standard for excellence, and our strides in digital innovation and commercial growth have earned international respect. Furthermore, our collective efforts to foster a positive workplace culture have been truly inspiring. I am immensely proud of all you have achieved.
You may wonder why I have chosen this moment to step down.
Having held various leadership roles over two decades-including marketing, communications, audio, music, and as Chief Executive of BBC Studios-I am deeply committed to the BBC’s success. I believe this timing offers the best opportunity for a new Director-General to lead the BBC into its next phase and shape the future Royal Charter.
This transition period will ensure continuity and position the BBC for sustained growth.
Thank you all for your steadfast dedication. Serving as the 17th Director-General has been an extraordinary honor. I look forward to connecting with many of you before my departure. The BBC is a cherished UK institution, and you are a world-class team. I will continue to be a passionate advocate for a strong BBC and a flourishing, civil society.

Dear team,
I have never been more proud of the outstanding journalism you deliver every day. Your work exemplifies the highest standards of journalistic excellence.
After much deliberation, I have chosen to resign as CEO of BBC News and Current Affairs. This decision follows the controversy surrounding the Panorama episode on President Trump, which has regrettably impacted the BBC’s reputation-an institution I deeply respect.
As the leader of BBC News, I take full responsibility and tendered my resignation to the Director-General last night.
Leadership in public service requires absolute accountability, which is why I am stepping down. While mistakes have been made, I firmly reject allegations that BBC News operates with systemic bias.
In today’s polarized climate, the role of BBC News is more vital than ever. Together, we have defied global trends by enhancing public trust in our journalism. I thank each of you, wherever you are in the world, for your courageous dedication to truth and impartiality.
My sincere hope is that you continue to embody the bravery and commitment that define our mission. I regret that I will not be present to continue leading and championing your exceptional work.
It has been a privilege to work alongside you all.
I will work closely with Tim to ensure a seamless transition that minimizes disruption to your essential work.
