IGP Egbetokun Allocates ₦2.17 Billion to Families of Deceased Police Officers

In a significant move to support the families of fallen law enforcement personnel, Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun recently distributed cheques totaling ₦2.17 billion to 1,574 beneficiaries. This event was held at the Force Headquarters in Abuja, drawing attendance from senior police officials, insurance representatives, and the recipients themselves.

Comprehensive Coverage Under Welfare and Insurance Schemes

The disbursement covers claims under the Group Life Assurance and the IGP Family Welfare Schemes, spanning policy years from 2015 through 2025. Notably, this payment also includes the settlement of long-outstanding claims that had been pending for nearly ten years, reflecting a commitment to resolving past delays.

Ongoing Commitment to Police Families

This marks the eleventh installment of such payments since Egbetokun took office. To date, over ₦24.2 billion has been allocated to assist 9,735 families of officers who lost their lives in the line of duty. The IGP emphasized that this initiative is both a tribute to the fallen and a solemn responsibility to their loved ones.

Modernizing Welfare Systems for Efficiency and Transparency

Highlighting future plans, Egbetokun revealed that the Police Force is actively revamping its welfare framework to enhance transparency and efficiency. The new system will be fully digitized, ensuring that entitlements are processed and paid promptly, reducing bureaucratic delays.

Appreciation for Collaborative Efforts and Leadership Support

The IGP praised the dedication of the Force Insurance Unit and the reliability of partnering insurance firms in fulfilling their obligations. He also acknowledged the Ministry of Police Affairs for its strategic guidance. Furthermore, Egbetokun expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for his steadfast backing of initiatives aimed at improving police welfare.

Context and Significance

With Nigeria’s security challenges intensifying, the welfare of police officers and their families remains a critical concern. According to recent data, over 1,200 officers have lost their lives in the past decade due to various security operations and incidents. This financial support not only provides immediate relief but also reinforces the government’s commitment to honoring the sacrifices made by these officers.
