Oyo State Initiates Removal of Illegal Structures from Road Reserves
The Oyo State Government has launched a comprehensive operation to dismantle unauthorized constructions encroaching on designated road reserves. This action follows the expiration of a previously issued eviction notice on Monday, October 27, 2025.
Eviction Notice and Grace Period
Initially, affected traders were served a 14-day eviction notice on Monday, October 13, 2025, which expired without full compliance. A subsequent reminder was issued last week, providing a final window for occupants to vacate the road setbacks and pedestrian pathways.
Collaborative Enforcement Efforts
Upon the lapse of the grace period, the Oyo State Rule of Law Enforcement Authority (OYRLEA), in partnership with the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, the Oyo State Road Transport Management Authority (OYRTMA), Environmental Task Force, Nigeria Police, Amotekun Corps, and other security agencies, commenced the demolition of illegal structures on Monday.
The enforcement team, under the leadership of DCP Francis Ojomo (Rtd.) and Mrs. Iyabo Akinbode, Chief of Staff to the OYRLEA Chairperson, began clearing obstructions from Airport Junction through Alakia-Adegbayi to Old Ife Road. The operation involved removing iron containers, mobile kiosks, merchandise, and other unauthorized installations blocking the right of way.
Commitment to a Safe and Investor-Friendly Environment
Honourable Justice Aderonke Adekemi Aderemi (Rtd.), Chairperson of OYRLEA, reiterated the Authority’s dedication to fostering a clean, orderly, and secure environment throughout Oyo State. She highlighted the critical role of rigorous enforcement in upholding the Rule of Law and creating a welcoming atmosphere for investors.
Justice Aderemi stated, “Our environment must be safe and attractive to investors. This aligns with the vision of our people-focused Governor, His Excellency Engr. Seyi Makinde, whose mandate guides our operations.”
Strategic Timing Ahead of International Airport Commissioning
The removal of illegal structures along key routes, especially in preparation for the upcoming commissioning of the International Airport, is a strategic priority. The Chairperson emphasized that this initiative is supported by ongoing public awareness campaigns, including radio jingles and media outreach, aimed at sensitizing traders and the general public.
Compliance and Legal Consequences
Traders operating along Airport Road, Old Ife Road, and Onipepeye in Ibadan have been strongly urged to adhere to the government’s directive, as the relocation grace period has ended. OYRLEA has warned that any individuals found re-establishing illegal structures on cleared road reserves or walkways will face prosecution without leniency.
The Authority affirmed its zero-tolerance stance on violations, underscoring its commitment to enforcing environmental regulations strictly to maintain public order and safety.
Final Call for Cooperation
Traders are advised to view the current enforcement as their last chance to comply with government policies. The Oyo State Government remains resolute in its mission to ensure that public spaces are free from obstructions, thereby enhancing mobility, safety, and the overall quality of life for residents and visitors alike.
