Exposing the Link Between Past Criminal Activities and Current Political Leadership in Nigeria
Orji Uzor Kalu, the former governor of Abia State, has raised concerns about the infiltration of Nigerian politics by individuals with questionable pasts. According to Kalu, some politicians currently holding office were previously involved in fraudulent schemes such as 419 scams and other illicit activities abroad.
From International Fraud to Political Power
In a recent video posted on his Facebook page, Senator Kalu highlighted that numerous politicians once engaged in advanced fee fraud and other serious crimes in regions like South Africa and South America. He emphasized, “Many of these individuals operated overseas, participating in 419 scams and various dangerous criminal enterprises. It’s often said that a leopard cannot change its spots, and this rings true for those accustomed to illicitly acquiring money.”
Kalu further explained that individuals habituated to misappropriating funds are unlikely to reform their character, stating, “Expecting a change in such people is unrealistic; their nature remains unchanged.”
Redirecting Nigeria’s Economic Trajectory
The former Senate Chief Whip called on both politicians and civil servants to take responsibility for steering Nigeria’s economy towards sustainable growth. He pointed out the paradox of hoarding foreign currency outside the country, saying, “Why do people keep dollars in their homes or distribute them when it’s not our legal tender? It’s crucial to channel these funds into Nigeria’s financial system so the nation can reap the benefits of its own economic activities.”
He stressed that Nigeria’s economy holds immense potential if managed correctly, urging stakeholders to focus on strengthening domestic financial circulation rather than externalizing wealth.

Kalu also appealed to Nigerians with integrity to enter the political arena for genuine reasons beyond personal enrichment. “Politics is not a domain for saints, but it certainly shouldn’t be dominated by those who have compromised their morals through deceitful practices, whether against foreigners or fellow citizens,” he remarked.
