“Being apart only deepens our affection for one another,” Lydia Velez Gonzalez shares with EW.
More than eighteen months after tying the knot on the finale of Love Is Blind season 5, Lydia Velez Gonzalez and James Milton Johnson IV remain a committed couple. However, their relationship now faces the challenge of long-distance living.
Balancing Ambitious Careers Across States
Lydia explains, “We’re both deeply invested in our professional growth. I recently started a new position just a month ago, while James has been with his company for a year but was recently transferred to Long Beach, California.” She adds that James is also pursuing his MBA, marking his second master’s degree, underscoring their shared dedication to personal and career development.
Maintaining Connection Despite Miles Apart
Currently, Lydia resides in Houston, Texas, while James is based in Long Beach. The couple frequently travels to bridge the distance, making the most of their time together. Lydia admits, “We miss each other immensely. Every moment we share is precious, and we strive to support one another whenever we reunite.” She candidly mentions her dislike for airports but emphasizes that the separation has strengthened their bond, making their time together even more meaningful. “Coming home to him after work is a comfort; he’s not just my partner but my best friend, so naturally, I want to see him as often as possible.”
Future Family Plans on the Horizon
When asked about starting a family, Lydia notes that while it’s a goal, it’s not immediate. “We’re still building our foundation and reaching our full potential. Having children is definitely part of our future plans, but it will happen in its own time.”
Highlighting the Joys Behind the Scenes
Lydia expresses a desire for viewers to see more of the positive and playful moments in their relationship, rather than the conflicts and past drama that were featured on the show. “Although I understand the need for entertainment, I wish the audience could witness how much fun we have together-our jokes, pranks, and lighthearted teasing. It’s a side of us that didn’t get much screen time.”
Moving On from Past Friendships
Regarding her relationship with former friend and podcast co-host Aaliyah Cosby, Lydia confirms they have not reconciled following the fallout involving her ex, Uche Okorhoa. “We’re no longer in contact. I wish her well and am glad to see she’s thriving.”
