The Poland national team has cancelled it’s World Cup play-off match against Russia next month due to its invasion of Ukraine, oyogist reports.
Poland’s football association’s president, Cezary Kulesza, made this known on Twitter.
His tweet read; “No more words, time to act! Due to the escalation of the aggression of the Russian Federation towards Ukraine the Polish national team does not intend to play the play-off match against Russia.”
The move was welcomed by Poland’s captain and record scorer, Robert Lewandowski, who said on Twitter:
“I can’t imagine playing a match with the Russian National Team in a situation when armed aggression in Ukraine continues.”
Over the past two days, more than 120,000 Ukrainian refugees have left Ukraine since Russia began its invasion on Thursday, according to the UN.
Poland has taken in around 100,000, including 9,000 who arrived on Saturday, Poland’s deputy interior minister, Pawel Szefernaker said.
