OYOGist.com has learned that Nollywood actor, Desmond Elliot has denied reports that he is spearheading the passage of a bill that will regulate speech on the social media.

Popular Twitter personality, Dr Olufunmilayo had insinuated that the Lagos State House of Assembly is developing a bill to regulate and control speech on social media, claiming that Desmond Elliot is said to be one of those pushing this.

According to him, the plan is to “deny the Lekki Massacre and then start arresting anyone who tweets about it.”

In a swift response, Desmond Elliot, who represents Surulere constituency at the State House of Assembly said that the report is totally unfounded.

In a short clip, the actor urged Dr Olufunmilayo to verify before pushing out information.

“Aren’t we going through a lot already? It’s not true. Period. No State House of Assembly has the jurisdiction to even deliberate on issues like that.”

He explained that the Social Media Bill lies on the exclusive list, meaning it can only be discussed at the federal level.

He further explained that he only called on celebrities and influential social media users to tone down the hate narrative.
