President Muhammadu Buhari has on Friday, 9th of October 2020, reacted to the growing protests by young Nigerians to abolish the notorious Special Anti-Robbery Squad known as SARS, OYOGist.com reports.

Friday is the second day of nationwide protests that grew out of the frustrations of Nigerians over extrajudicial killings, abduction and extortion by the SARS police.

After Nigerian youths trooped out across the nation to demand the total abolishment of the squad, alongside top celebrities and several international bodies, President Buhari has reacted to the protests for the first time.

The President said he has met with the IGP Adamu Mohammad today and is being brief regularly on the reform efforts ongoing to end police brutality.

“I met again with the IGP tonight. Our determination to reform the police should never be in doubt. I am being briefed regularly on the reform efforts ongoing to end police brutality and unethical conduct, and ensure that the Police are fully accountable to the people,” Buhari tweeted.

T”he IG already has my firm instructions to conclusively address the concerns of Nigerians regarding these excesses, & ensure erring personnel are brought to justice. I appeal for patience & calm, even as Nigerians freely exercise their right to peacefully make their views known.”

President Buhari also praised the men and women of the Nigerian Police Force.

“The vast majority of men and women of the Nigeria Police Force are patriotic and committed to protecting the lives and livelihoods of Nigerians, and we will continue to support them to do their job,” he said.
