Barcelona forward, Lionel Messi has become football’s highest-paid player, overtaking Ronaldo who was the first football billionaire after a new Forbes report says he has earned over $1 billion (US dollars) in career earnings.
Cristiano Ronaldo was the first footballer to become a billionaire after scoring a mouth-watering lifetime deal worth $1 billionaire with Nike, OYOGist.com recalls.
Both Messi and Ronaldo have been football’s longest rivals, holding the most sway both financially and in terms of dominance on the pitch. Financially, Ronaldo has held on to the top spot with multiple deals, businesses, brand endorsements, and revenue streams.
This year, however, Messi upturned Ronaldo’s reign and became football’s highest-paid athlete after earning $126 million, placing Ronaldo at No. 2 with $117 million.
Another player that is edging towards the top list, according to Forbes, is PSG player Kylian Mbappe who has closed in at No. 4 on the Forbes’ list with a revenue of $48 million.
