Students and staff of the Lagos State University (LASU), Ojoo Lagos, were taken by surprise when, on Monday, they were greeted to a locked gate, OYOGist.com reports.

The members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and Non-academic Staff Union of Universities had hijacked the institution, locked the students, and its Vice-Chancellor Prof Olanrewaju Fagboun out on Monday over the disagreement with the government on the non-implementation of the minimum wage.

The aggrieved members of the union told students and school staff that there would be no resumption without the implementation of the minimum wage.

Speaking to the students, a representative of the school told the stranded scholars to return to their various homes and come back for activities next week Monday.

Many have reacted to the development online, with some sharing the opinion that the union (ASUU) is only seeking after the interests of its members at the detriment of the students.

OYOGist.com recalls that schools across the country have been on vacation since the outbreak of the coronavirus pandememic.

One user whose handle is @amuniyaro on Twitter wrote, “ASUU isn’t working for the benefits of Nigerian Students. It’s clearly that it’s just a group of university staffs hiding under the umbrella to gain something base on their self interest. Even the junior staffs aren’t happy with what’s going on right now.”

Another user, @MFaarees blamed the union for the setback in the country’s educational system.
