Former striker Dimitar Berbatov has suggested a new position for Man Utd to target following the signing of Donny van de Beek.

De Beek became the club’s first signing of the summer after joining from Ajax for £35 million.

He will compete with midfielders Paul Pogba, Bruno Fernandes and Scott McTominay for a first team place during the upcoming season.

Berbatov has now suggested the position that Man Utd should target for their next transfer.

He said: “I think in defence, a centre-back is something that they need to look for.

“If they are going to buy someone or not we are going to see, but I think that is where they need to strengthen. Everything else at the moment looks balanced.

“For me they need someone who can accommodate Harry Maguire. Harry is more of a guy for getting the ball out of the defence and giving it to the midfield, so maybe someone who is different to that but also strong.

“They need to copy the Rio [Ferdinand] and [Nemanja] Vidic partnership from the past.”

They’ve been linked with RB Leipzig wonderkid Dayot Upamecano. The 21-year-old is one of the most valuable defenders in the world after a series of brilliant displays in Germany.

It now looks like United will wait until next summer before signing the player.

Solskjaer has also set his sights on Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund. The Englishman has been heavily linked with a move, although no offer has been agreed just yet.

Antoine Griezmann has emerged as a potential alternative after Lionel Messi’s stunning u-turn at Barcelona.

The World Cup winner has failed to become a hit at the Nou Camp and could be available for transfer this summer.

Thiago is another player that’s been linked with a move to Old Trafford. The 29-year-old is wanted by Liverpool, but United could now swoop in to sign him
