Arsenal newcomer Gabriel Magalhaes has named Gunners teammate David Luiz as the player he idolised as a youngster and says it’s a “dream come true” to be on the same team as him.
On Tuesday, Arsenal announced the signing of the 22-year-old defender from Lille on a long-term contract.
Gabriel made the move to Lille from Brazilian outfit Avai back in 2016 for just £1.5million and became a key first-teamer last season, featuring 34 times in all competitions.
His impressive form and credentials saw him linked with numerous other clubs in recent months, including Everton and Manchester United.
However, Arsenal have triumphed in the battle for Gabriel’s services, their defence strengthened further after William Saliba’s return to the Emirates Stadium from Saint-Etienne.
Gabriel’s arrival was announced on social media with footage of a video call between the player and his fellow Brazilians Luiz and Willian.
“For sure David is an example, he is a player I admire very much,” said Gabriel. “I was always a big fan of him and everything he achieved.
“I watched him since I was a kid, I played video games with his character and today it is a dream come true to be here with him and hopefully play next to him soon.”
Gabriel was sensational for Lille last season and his skills and efforts will bolster the Arsenal defence massively.
With David Luiz, Willian and Gabriel Martinelli also in the Gunners ranks, the 22-year-old has several compatriots who can help him acclimatise to England and the Premier League.
With Arsenal having won the FA Cup, qualified for the Europa League and looking invigorated under Arteta, as well as also winning the Community Shield, things are looking up in the Gunners camp
