The National Agency for Food and Drugs, has warned Nigerians to avoid the ingestion of organic apple and black currant from Australia. NAM stated that NAFDAC Director-General Prof. Moji Adeyeye, who revealed this to news correspondent on Tuesday disclosed that the goods were deemed to be harmful to human use, oyogist.com reports.
“The Hong Kong Food and Environmental Hygiene Center for Food Protection (CFS) has cautioned against the consumption of australian Pure Tassie Organic Apple and Blackcurrant Juice.”
“It was attributed to the excessive patulin level (a mycotoxin) that had reached the legal cap in fruit juice,” Adeyeye added.
She further clarified that the amount of patulin content can cause liver, spleen and kidney damage in the affected fruit juice.
The toxic amount, she states, will affect the immune system and cause nausea, gastrointestinal discomfort and vomiting.
She has also confirmed the product name is Pure Tassie, an Australian organic apple and blackcurrant juice.
NAFDAC boss has told health care professionals and consumers to report to the nearest NAFDAC office via their number (20543 TOLL FREE) for all networks.
“We implore importers, manufacturers, retailers and customers to suspend the manufacture, shipment, sale and consumption of the affected fruit juice immediately.”
